Next-Generation of Sci-Fi Shows on SyFy Channel

New Syfy Dramas Include a Return to the Stars
Three new scripted dramas represent Syfy's look into its own future

Syfy is looking to its future, and, praise be to the Prophets, it's not all reality shows and wrestling.

The network, which has sometimes inspired the question "Why are they called 'Syfy' again?", has announced a "broad-based slate" of three new shows designed to establish its next generation of scripted dramas -- all of them, gratifyingly enough for us fans, involving solid names firmly associated with serious, quality television drama.
Syfy: The Next Generation

Syfy's current coterie of scripted series -- summer shows Warehouse 13, Alphas, Eureka, and Haven; winter series Being Human, Lost Girl, and Merlin; and the currently running (but for how long?) Sanctuary -- divide into two tiers, not counting imports: a veteran group that's three or four seasons old, and two hit freshmen, Alphas and Being Human.

Syfy must be thinking that the older group won't last forever (Eureka, entering its fifth season next year, has already been given the chop), and so its new kids will need some younger siblings against which it can seem like the veteran. (Don't forget there's a Helena Wells spin-off series on the way as well.)

So here's the dope on the new shows that Syfy has put into development:
Untitled Robert H. Wolfe Project

The logline: "After decades of war, the newly formed Unity Democracy orders a volatile mix of humans and trans-humans to lead the Starship Defender on an expedition in search of lost worlds requiring law and order."

Wolfe is a veteran sci-fi producer and writer who started out at Deep Space Nine, where he wrote or co-wrote over 30 of its more memorable episodes; most relevant to this space-faring drama, Wolfe was responsible for developing Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda. He also wrote Riverworld for Syfy and has been a writer-producer at Alphas, The Dresden Files, The 4400, and The Gates.
Seeing Things (working title)

The logline: "A cop becomes a ghost after his violent death and the only person who can help close his last case is a socially awkward man who realizes that the hallucinations he's had all his life may not be a figment of his imagination."

This new series comes from David Slack, who started out in animation (Jackie Chan Adventures, Teen Titans) and lately has been working on scripted dramas (Person of Interest, Lie to Me, The Forgotten, In Plain Sight). The pilot is being written by Slack with Gabrielle Stanton.
Ghost Projekt

The logline: "Based on the popular comic series, a female KGB agent and male American weapons inspector form an unlikely partnership when a deadly force is unwittingly unleashed from a Siberian research facility."

Ghost Projekt is a "supernatural horror" graphic novel line at Oni Press from manga artist Steve Rolston and writer Joe Harris. The series is being developed by Brett Matthews, who, awesomely, is a Hugo-Award-nominated writer with a solid background in both comics and genre TV: he wrote both the Firefly episode "Heart of Gold" and the Serenity comics for Dark Horse, and worked on both Buffy and Angel. He was the executive story editor for season 6 of Supernatural and wrote three eps, including the vamp-obsession send-up "Live Free or Twihard."
The Verdict

All three of these new shows sound like must-see viewing for science-fiction and fantasy fans, and -- whatever beefs we have with the network that loves to cancel shows we love -- well deserving of a round of kudos to Syfy for making them possible.

Of course, you pull out the worst example from their history. God that was weird show, and not even weird in a good way.

But they had some INCREDIBLE sci-fi shows come from them in the past:

-Battlestar Galactica
-Dr. Who
-Farscape
-Sanctuary
-Sliders (later seasons were Sci-Fi)
-Stagate SG-1 (laters seasons were Sci-Fi)
-Stargate: Atlantis (arguably the best Stargate series)
-Stargate: Universe

I must clarify what I meant by 'all shows.'

I meant all 'Syfy' shows. Battlestar Galactica was AWESOME. Farscape I've been meaning to watch but the bit I have seen is very cool. SG1 and Atlantis I've seen bits and pieces. Universe was awesome. Had a real Battlestar Galactica feel to it and it was criminal that they canceled it.

Sci-fi used to have The Invisible Man which was pretty cool too. Anyone remember that show? And of course "Adventures in Japanese Animation" in the mid 90s. It's where I was introduced to Lensman and Vampire Hunter D.
