For Ys games and Legend of Xanadu, yes, you both start out fighting slimes.

Rats are more of an early western cRPG thing. Ultima, Wizardry, Might & Magic, and The Bard's Tale all feature rats.

I am disappointed that you do not have wolves on this list.
