Japanese Punk, Hardcore, Crust, Metal, Noise etc...

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

If you've got any suggestions for Japanese bands in the veins of:

Post-Hardcore: Helmet, Quicksand, Jawbox, etc.

Space Rock: Smashing Pumpkins, Failure, codeseven, etc.

Prog-whatever: Deftones, Tool, Dredg, etc.

Trippy stuff with female vocalists: Bjork, Portishead, Sneaker Pimps, etc.

Let me know.
You have pretty damn good taste in music sir!

Dredg is way underrated, and Bjork is amazing, not to mention Tool or the Deftones. I enjoy some post-hardcore as well, although mostly for the drumming

Off the top of my head: Melt-Banana, GISM, Gallhammer, Bastard, Corrupted, Gauze, Disclose, The Stalin, Confuse, Assfort, Sigh, Envy, Boris, 324, and Unholy Grave are among my favorites.

As far as releases go, I own the Discordance Axis/Corrupted/324 split album and a great Japanese crust comp called "What is Crust?". There's probably more I'm forgetting though. Great thread!
I JUST discovered Boris a couple minutes ago, came here to gawk about how I ever lived my life up until this point, and saw that you listed them in your post. Listening to "Vein" now -- absolutely earth-shattering. I'm definitely gonna have to check out those other bands you mentioned (Gallhammer, Bastard, Corrupted, Sigh, 324, Unholy Grave? I can't wait to get started!).

I was wondering, does anyone have some great sludge recommendations for me? I know about Eyehategod, but I don't really know where to start in the genre (other than side-2 of "My War" and early Melvins records). I definitely have a deeper appreciation for sludge when it's juxtaposed with hardcore, but full-on dripping sludge is welcome too.

The only negative thing I can say about Boris is that their discography is too big! They can be a bit inconsistent and some of their albums are pretty "meh" to be honest. I like Pink the best, which is also their most "mainstream" and critically acclaimed release.

As for some of the other bands I mentioned:
Gallhammer - All female black metal band. The band name is an obvious tribute to Hellhammer.
Bastard - Fantastic fast 80s hardcore.
Corrupted - Crushing sludge. Album and song titles are in Spanish(!?).
Sigh - Black metal band, formed way back in the early 90s. Had a loose connection to the Norwegian scene back in the day.
324 - Modern grindcore. Fairly clean and metallic sounding.
Unholy Grave - Crusty political grind. Fantastic band!

Sludge is kind of a mixed bag for me. I generally can't stand bluesy (or stoner or "Southern") style bands, or the hundreds of Black Sabbath rip-offs. The best sludge to me is the crusty political stuff like Dystopia, Grief, Noothgrush, and of course Corrupted.

I'm honestly not too familiar with genre. I usually turn to death/doom or funeral doom metal for the slow heavy stuff.

Seconded. I'm glad to see someone else remembers and listens to Failure besides me! Most underrated 90's band ever.

Alright, guys -- my first piece of Japanese vinyl, along with some other awesome swag I got at the Melt-Banana show in Nashville. "Bambi's Dilemma" signed by every member (including their roadie "Blacky" at the merch stand, just to make my copy extra-special), the night's set list written in katakana, and a t-shirt that will unfortunately never fit me in a million years. Yasuko, Agata, and Rika-san are unbelievably nice and happily took pictures with everyone who asked -- Yasuko gave hugs to me and all my friends. They really seemed to take a liking to me for using a few nice terms in Japanese and pronouncing their names properly.

I invited so many of my friends to this show that I retroactively decided to turn it into a belated birthday party, and I couldn't be anymore satisfied. One of the best times of my life -- and Melt-Banana has delivered this for me twice now...

My good friends in the band Spelling Bee opened for them in St. Louis a few weeks ago and implored me to go, offering up room in their house. Since Melt-Banana had yet to add Nashville to their stops on this tour at that point, I decided the road trip was worth it. And man, was it ever! Spelling Bee + Yowie + Melt-Banana was the best damn lineup I ever could have asked for.

When I stage-dived that night, someone's watch hit me on the eyebrow and gave me a pretty nice little gash. I was so pumped on adrenaline that I didn't even notice that blood was running all the way down to my jaw-line. Some people stopped me during the song and asked if I was alright, but I was on top of the world, so I would just smile and keep acting like a maniac. After the song was over, Yasuko gave me a thumbs-up and said, "Burrud is best apprause!" I would've loved to have gotten a picture of the mess, but there was a thunderstorm that night and it all got washed off once I stepped outside.

There were a ton of pictures taken tonight, so I'll throw some up as they materialize! :D

Oh yeah I like all sorts of black metal! Probably one of the best genres musically, but one of the worst ideologically.

I'd say of all the extreme metal subgenres, black metal is probably the most open to experimentation. At least it is as long as you stay away from the tr00 bl@ck m3tal types who seem to think it's not black metal unless it sounds like Pure Holocaust.

I don't know if there really is an actual black metal 'ideology', but if you're talking about stuff like NSBM, or the infamous church burnings then I'd agree. RAWR SATAN stuff however has been around in metal long before black metal came about, and honestly I'd hardly call that an ideological stance.

Sigh's actually one of my favorite bands period. Still a bit disappointed that the new album's been pushed back to 2012.

Of course NSBM is abhorrent, but I also have beef with bands like Graveland and Kroda (Крода) who don't even own up to their views, instead claiming they're "pagan nationalists" or some other bullshit.

I'm actually really pleased about this current wave of "post-black metal" (Alcest, Wolves In the Throne Room, etc) because the people behind this music 1) actually behave like coherent human beings and 2) piss off the tr00 idiots like nothing else.

But anyway, Sigh is awesome. I didn't even know anything about a new album, my favorite will probably always be Scorn Defeat.
