My dad and I thought it had to be the battery which would've been an easy fix, it looked bad, it's old, but nope... their readings were totally fine and it wasn't getting charge, so it's the alternator.
You took the battery to an auto parts store and carted it inside so they could test it? Just hooking to to a voltmeter isn't good enough. I had 1 cell die in a battery in a previous car. The dome light and radio came on just fine with their low draws but it would just click when I tried to start. There's a machine that runs a few tests. Unless your car has a horribly cramped engine compartment changing the alternator probably isn't too bad. Though the last vehicle I had to do it on was an 83 Nissan truck that had plenty of room to work.

@Luke

That really sucks. Hopefully it was a happy life before the end.

I don't mind us having a Veteran's Day; what I don't like is how the post office gets to take the day off but not the rest of the country. Sort of like MLK Jr.'s birthday.

Well it sounds like I should get a second hand look then. And if I describe some more symptoms you guys might have an idea too...

The car never died on me on the road or anything. I could have the AC, radio, and things on with no trouble. But whenever I was idling at a stop, especially in the morning or after just driving to some nearby places (like if I went through a drivethru up the street), my car would start revving up on its own acting pretty weird. Hard to put in words I guess, but whenever I described this to some of my friends and others they said it doesn't sound like a battery thing.

Yesterday when we finally got my car to start on the way to Autozone it was definitely shakier than ever before, rumbling, and I didn't bother turning on the radio or anything. But yeah, it felt like I barely made it to the store. I almost didn't make it back home since it took a few tries there to start it up after they ran some tests.

So yeah, are those bad alternator symptoms? I definitely don't know much on alternators. In some of the random research I've done off and on sometimes though, for my vehicle (96' Acura 3.2 TL), it sounds like the revving thing could be an Idle Air Control valve issue, maybe I need to replace that or get it cleaned out. But maybe these symptoms can come from an alternator too? Or a battery? Whenever the weird revving would happen my lights wouldn't flicker or anything like that either. This has literally been going on for like a year or more though. It was just very subtle, until several months ago and it just got worse as time went by obviously.

All in all this damn car has been a ticking timebomb. About two years ago one night I was driving home and ran over a cylinder block or something equally strong in the middle of the damn road, that bent my frame so bad that it can't be repaired (and my car doesn't feel as smooth/centered since then), that instantly destroyed my radiator on impact, and ever since then this thing has just been falling apart. When I have no money! Lovely. The new radiator I got didn't last long either, it developed a huge crack on the top. I have to fill it up with water whenever I drive anywhere for the day and highway driving isn't happening. Fun stuff.

The alternator charges the battery. If it wasn't working, the battery would run dead so your light and radio would get dimmer and eventually when you tried to start the car, the engine would turn over slowly or not at all and you'd just get a click and nothing else. If the battery was the problem you'd either have the same issues like if the alternator wasn't charging it, or like I described in my situation where the inside light and radio worked, but just a click when trying to start.

Now you mention the car has been running rough and you can over something that was bad enough to bend the frame, was the engine actually checked out? Was the oil pan dented so that maybe the sump can't suck up oil properly to send back to the top of the engine? Did you check that the oil isn't leaking out and there is still actually oil in the car? It could be any other number of things that got screwed up when you hit the block. You need to go to a shop and pay for a diagnostic look to see exactly what the problem is in case it is something not too bad that can be done. Though really it sounds like the car is done for if the frame is out of whack and whatnot since it is a 15 year old car. Hopefully the Pharmacy job works out and you can find another vehicle as a stopgap after a few paychecks.

It's a shame, it's sad, and it just sucks. She had a great life, but I hate to see my Mom and Pops in such a state. We're all bummed.
I'm really sorry to hear that, Luke. But I'm sure she was happy with you guys, especially as you said you rescued her, so just remember the good times.

Smile: Turner Broadcasting called, and they definitely want to conduct a second interview at their Techwood location, this time with the team of individuals I'd be working with and my potential boss. I'm nervous but really excited.

I have a TV that just started doing that, it sucks. It was a really nice TV, and manufactured as recently as 2003, so I have no idea why it's dying so soon.
Mine was a giant beastly old Panasonic that I had only had for a few weeks. Thankfully I found a nice cheap 2005 Sony Wega at Goodwill last night so I scooped that up. Works like a charm. Of course now my back is killing me from moving various TVs up and down the stairs.

Luke, I missed your earlier post, read the battery problems Xeogred was facing at the top of the previous page Replied without scrolling down. Real sorry about your Doberman, its really true about a dog is a best friend.

@ Ack - That is good news, good luck!

@ Xeogred - Read my previous Reply with questions to help you troubleshoot. Try the volt meter with the battery IN THE CAR. That will confirm if the alternator is good or not.

Really sorry to hear about this man. I know how absolutely awful the situation is. I had to put my dog down and I still think about her every day. I hope the best for you and your parents.
