Also, I seem to recall the forums on Steam being hacked this past summer...right? If so it seems that they haven't made fixes they needed to.
Very little is invulnerable. It's a non-stop amount of work keeping hackers out. The point was, at least for me, that Sony looked as if they didn't even try.
Agreed. The bigger issue with Sony was that they went down for an extended period of time. Steam is still operational, just their forums are down - I played L4D2 last night when I saw this new pop up.

Fair rebuttals, but I seem to remember more people being pissed about the hack and theft of sensitive information (encyrption seems a minor point, as was pointed out) rather than the down time. There was also anger about it being a repeat occurence. Regardless, it seems to me that those who were frothing angry about Sony should be frothing mad about Steam...but Valve will probably get a pass because OMGTF2&HL2!!1! and Sony is evil incarnate.

Essentially. The people were really complaining about the downtime, but that just sounds petty, so they complained about the theft instead. It's like how many pro-lifers are really anti-premarital sex, but to disguise that they say they're pro-life.

IMO, a lot of the issues over sensitive information were directed more at the lack of effort on Sony's part to do much of anything to protect it. Either company offers a major online service that is going to be a target, and thus warrants security. Sony spent a lot more time killing off features of its system to prevent piracy than it did protecting user data. Then they had the downtime so the could add security that should have been there from day 1.

While it still sucks that Valve got hit, part of the message they sent was a reminder about a security feature that's already in place. That, to me, illustrates the difference between the two.

I use a credit card, but like I learned when my PSN got h4xord once, I always delete my CC info after I buy something. I also use SteamGuard. I've never used their forum, so I think I'm safe.

I'm not happy about it, but the fact that there isn't downtime for the main service makes this less annoying than the PSN h4x in my opinion.

Didn't we already make those jokes eight years ago when Valve "got hacked" and their source code to Half-Life 2 was leaked*?

Awww crap. Well, so much for my false sense of security.

And how come I didn't get a similar e-mail or message from Valve? I've certainly paid them enough money. EDIT: I see it's on the forums main page now. Still, an e-mail notice would have been nice.
