RPG Hacks & Unofficial games

Post by BoneSnapDeez »

Anyone ever play either of these?

The Legend of Zelda: Parallel Worlds
http://sites.google.com/site/zeldaparallelworlds/
(I've also seen repro carts of this, so it can be played in an actual SNES)

Final Fantasy: Endless Nova
http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/332/F ... +Nova.html

Most ROM hacks and RPGMaker games are pretty hit or miss, but these two have gotten a lot of press so I'm curious if anyone has ever tried these out.

Any other hacks, fan games, or RPGMaker stuff worth trying? I really dig the Aveyond series from Amaranth Games.

I haven't played those, but Zelda: Return of the Hylian is available for PSP and DC. It's part of a trilogy of PC fangames based on the LTTP engine/sprites.

Parallel Worlds is brutal. If you don't use a walkthrough, you have to spend a lot of time in this game. At parts it's so difficult it's not even fun.

not yet, but it's just a matter of using BootDreams to burn the .cdi file as an image. Pop it in yr DC and play!

Where does the challenge come from? I assume the controls are still nice and fluid because Parallel Worlds is really just a patch for LttP. Insanely hard enemies? Tough mazes?

Super Mario Bros 3 Challenge will probably always be my favorite rom hack. I also can't believe I finished it... haha, wow. Although I'm sure I abused save states.

I was really into romhacking and that community about 10 years ago. Spent a lot of time with MetEdit for Metroid, there were some cool Metroid hacks back then and it was a fun level editor. Also messed with some Megaman 2 editor. But I honestly can't say I've played very many hacks that I've cared for over the years. When it comes to Super Metroid, most people have the mentality that you have to have walljumping absolutely mastered to 110% precision, spikes everywhere, and super hard difficulty apparently = GOOD! Nope. As for Link to the Past hacks, there seems to be a lot of good ones out there but the little I've played of most has just never really hooked me in.

On paper I always thought the idea of hacks for Super Metroid and Link to the Past would be the greatest thing ever, and being able to edit them myself, but I quickly discovered I just don't have that kind of crazy patience and haven't played many hacks that really wowed me.

Backtracking. If you ever hated having to backtrack a bit to get something in any of the Zelda games, you're going to hate this. Back and forth throughout the entire dungeons many times. The first hour running around trying to find shit you don't even have a sword while enemies are intently attacking. Oh, and this time, the guards are faster than you.

20 minutes of this has been better than the 15 hours I wasted playing Twilight Princess.
