Multi Emulator Mointor

Post by miseryguts »

I have just inherited a very capable PC which runs all my emu's up to & incl the PS2, Wii/Gamecube pretty much flawlessly.
I want to dedicate this machine specifically to emulation, for all platforms ranging from the Atari 2600 to the ones mentioned above, with some kind of universal frontend.

My main question regards the monitor.. is there a specific one (make/model) that would suit this purpose better than others?, i'm guessing that a CRT would be best as none of the platforms i am emulating originally supported HD resolutions, and i have quite a few lightgun games, that won't work on anything else (right..?)

Thanks.

You might as well get an HDTV since (as far as I'm aware) USB adapters don't support light guns. You can however, get an LCD TopGun or use GlovePie with the WiiMote Zapper.

i would still get an hd monitor man. some systems like ps2/gamecube have games that support letterbox video format, and dreamcast emulation supports 1080p video nowadays. plus for old consoles you can just run filters within the emulator's video settings to add things like picture fuzz & screen curvature that would look more authentic than running them normally on a crt monitor. not to mention any monitor you buy is gonna be at least $200-$300, so i'd like having that peace of mind that i could use the nice hd monitor elsewhere afterwards if i choose.

CRT VGA Monitor
The LCD is better for viewing text, but with the CRT you get all the lower resolutions. For example my G3 iMac CRT when kicked to OS9 games would not work with the spare LCD plugged in, but no problems with a VGA CRT. You can also hook up consoles with VGA adapters. Dreamcast, VGA box, a VGA CRT and Lightguns work beautiful!

If it's just for emulation wouldn't connecting it to a tube TV work?

I would recommend this as well. But be careful if you want low resolutions. The 15 kHz horizontal sync rate is often not supported on a lot of VGA CRTs (not the VGA standard, after all). If you want to play older games in their native resolution (and have an Arcade VGA or card that works with Soft 15 kHz), you'll want that supported. Here's a good list of some monitors that should work:

I personally use a Mitsubishi MegaView Pro 27 for emulation. Handles all kinds of custom resolutions very well!
