MMORPGs?

Post by SpaceBooger »

I used to play WOW until I got married and started grad school.
Now that grad school is done I want to play another online RPG, but since I am still married I don't want to pay for a service when I am not sure how much time I can play each month.

Are there any good free MMORPGs out there?

I know there are free WOW servers, but everyone I tried did not have the community feel that the original game has.
So any recommendations?

Guild Wars is good and free (apart from the cost of the game box obviously).

I used to play that. I know that Mozgus plays it as well.

If you're into Diablo esque games then the original Neverwinter Nights is awesome. It's free to play online and there's plenty of persistant worlds to jump into. PW is the NWN version of an mmorpg server. You create an account on the server and then you can only play that character when you're logged into that server. I'm not sure if a lot of people have moved to NWN2 yet, I had the collectors edition pre-ordered but it ran like crap so I never touched it again.

I tried so hard to get to play that and it just wouldn't work on my computer... maybe I'll check it out again.

Anarchy Online is...okay.

In general, though, most free MMOs are just grindfests. Like, more than your average paying MMO.

Oh, there's also PlaneShift, an open-source MMO. Roleplay enforced, and RIDICULOUSLY detailed character creation, though it's still in early Alpha.
