Re: 2012 Together Retro Calendar
Heres my plan:
Jan - Golden Axe Warrior - Emulate - Gens
Feb - Soul Calibur 1 - Emulate - NullDC
Mar - Y's - Emulate - Magic Engine
Apr - Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 - Emulate - NullDC
May - Wolfenstein 3D - Emulate - Dosbox
Jun - Command & Conquer - Emulate - Dosbox
Jul - Guardian Heroes - Emulate - SSF
July - Gunstar Heroes - Emulate - Gens
Aug -Bomberman 94 - Emulate - Magic Engine
Sep - Super Mario Brothers 2/Doki Doki Panic - Buying FDS
Oct - Maniac Mansion - Emulate - Scumm VM
Oct - Crush series - Emulate - Magic Engine
Nov - Panel de Pon - Emulate - Dolphin
Dec - Do Don Pachi - Emulate - Mame
In all honesty, I already own all the games but Crush games, Golden Axe Warrior, and Doki Doki Panic. So I will be playing them on their original consoles, except the FDS I dont know about hta tone. They break pretty easily. I will be playing Wolf3d with a texture pack though, the walls make me dizzy.

Re: 2012 Together Retro Calendar
I'm going for:
Jan: Golden Axe Warrior/ Emulation
Feb: Soul Calibur 1/ Dreamcast
Mar: Y's/ Emulation
Apr: THPS2/ DC and Xbox ports because hey why not
May: Wolf3D/ Haven't found a DOS pc so probably DOSBox
Jun: Command & Conquer/ I'll be going with DOSBox as the Decade collection doesn't work well with Win7
Jul: Guardian Heroes/ Original Saturn for me
July: Gunstar Heroes/ Again, official copy for me
Aug: Bomberman 94/ I'll be playing it on the Genesis
Sep: SMB2/ Emulation for me
Oct: Maniac Mansion/ If I can hunt down the C64 copy that's what I'll be playing it on
Oct: Crush series/ Genesis release(s) for me
Nov: Panel de Pon/ I have no clue, I'm not a huge fan, we'll see...
Dec: Do Don Pachi/ I'll probably import a Saturn copy
@Noise The PSN port of Wolf3D is really good, you won't be disappointed.

Mar - Y's - Turbo Duo. IIRC the disk is in there right now.
Apr - Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 - DC, if I play.
May - Wolfenstein 3D - Real DOS on a P200MMX. Overkill sure, but I don't have a 486.
Jun - Command & Conquer - Windows 98 on a PII-266. It's already installed
Jul - Guardian Heroes - Saturn, the disk is laying on top of my Saturn IIRC
July - Gunstar Heroes - Genesis via Myth MD
Aug -Bomberman 94 - TurboDuo, or Mednafen if someone wants to do netplay
Sep - Super Mario Brothers 2/Doki Doki Panic - NES,
Oct - Maniac Mansion - C64, I already have the disks on my 1541UII
Oct - Crush series - TurboDuo, I already have one of these, forget which.
Nov - Panel de Pon - SNES I guess? Via PowerPak
Dec - Do Don Pachi - Probably MAME with a Saturn pad like I've done for the past year.
I'd recommend ScummVM for DoTT. DDP has Saturn and PSX ports.

Is there something wrong with DosBox concerning DotT, or does ScummVM do a much better job or something?
I'll look into the PS1 and Saturn versions of DDP.

Re: 2012 Together Retro Calendar
So I figured I would write up some of the differences between the different versions of Dodonpachi, before people actually drop money on them.
PS1 port: This port looks and sounds better than the Saturn port, but unfortunately it has some flaws that actually break the scoring system. First, the chain drops faster than it should. When going into the first mid-boss, there is an extreamly small window to catch your laser on the boss and hold your chain. Second, uncovering bees with the tip of your laser does not add 1 to your chain, making it impossible to full chain stages, which is what Dodonpachi is all about.
Satun Port: Of the retail versions available, this one is the best. However, it still has some flaws that make it far from arcade-perfect. Most notably, the game runs at a faster speed than the pcb. Now, I don't mean it has less slowdown (although it does), I mean the game is actually moving faster, thus making the Saturn version much more difficult than the pcb. However, even with this increased difficulty, it is still feasable to full-chain stages in this port. Also, this port includes a "Saturn Mode", which adds a "Stage 0" to the beginning of the game, takes away the ability to loop the game, and lets you fight the true last boss at the end of the first loop. This mode is a little easier than the insanely tough "Arcade Mode"
MAME: Obviously the cheapest route, and even though I'm not a fan of emulation, this would be the best choice for most. MAME is capable of emulating the pcb near-perfectly. I am not aware of any differences, aside that MAME can actually fix some bugs found on the original pcb. There isn't much to say here, this version of the game should also be far easier to obtain a "1cc" than any other version.
The least desirable of all these would be the PSN download version, as it uses the ps1 port, and if I am not mistaken, has some input lag issues.
That said, I do hope that some of you pick up the Saturn port. I've been trying at a 1cc of this speed-fed beast for a while now, and I don't plan on playing any until its time in TR
I hope this helps some people, and I really hope that people don't write this off as a "not gonna play", as it is such a historical shoot 'em up in the "manic, bullet hell" genre, and should be experienced by all!

I'll probably emulate the arcade version if I play. My Saturn doesn't play Japanese games.

No, there's nothing wrong with Dosbox. ScummVM is just nicer to use. Installation is dead simple, configuration is mostly unnecessary (though you can enable graphics filters if you want), and it comes with a nice clicky interface, just like the games you play with it. There's also less overhead since you're not emulating anything.
Reading dunpeal's mini-reviews of the DDP ports, I think I'll be sticking with MAME. No point in playing a broken version, and the MAME version is plenty fast enough for me.

Re: 2012 Together Retro Calendar
I'm new to this, and I'll actually start with Monkey Ball next month, but it's good to see these are done so far in advance so you have plenty of time to track down the games if need be, anywhere, here's what I'm thinking for 2012...
Golden Axe Warrior - SMS/360
I've been planning on getting a SMS for awhile, but if I don't or can't, I'll just play it on the 360 Ultimate Genesis Collection.
Soul Calibur 1 - DC
The only game in the series I haven't played, I'll be getting this one on the DC, I'm honestly looking foward to playing it.
Ys I - PSP
I've played a few different versions of this game, having beaten the DS version in early 2010, but I think I'll use this as an excuse to pick it up on the PSP.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 - XBOX
I played the heck out of the PSX/DC versions when I was younger, I really used to love these games, but I think I'll go with the Xbox version since it's the only one I've never played. Depending on time (and costs) I may also try one of the handheld ports, more for morbid curiosity than anything else.
Wolfenstein 3D
I remember playing this when I was a kid, but I don't recall ever beating it. I'll be playing it for sure, but I'll need to decide which port I want to play, likely XBLA or PSN, but I can't rule out SNES or GBA.
Command & Conquer - Saturn
Another game I spent a lot of time with in my youth, I think I'm going to go with the Saturn port to be different, and have an excuse to hook my Saturn up to the extra TV.
Treasure Heroes 2 Pack - Guardian Heroes and Gunstar Heroes - Genesis/XBLA
I love both these games so much, I've beaten then countless times and I'll gladly play them again. Sadly, I don't own Gunstar for the Genesis anymore, but I'm going to try to track it down, otherwise I have it on XBLA and I was planning on getting Guardian Heroes on XBLA anyway since a copy on the Saturn can be fairly pricey.
Bomberman 94 - Genesis
I'm not a huge Bomberman fan, but I'll still give it a go as long as the Genesis version isn't too expensive, otherwise I'll just download it on PSN.
Super Mario Brothers 2/Doki Doki Panic
I've always enjoyed this game, it was one of the first games I played on the NES, but I've never actually owned a cart of it. I'll try to remedy that in the coming months, it won't be a priority though since I can just play it on All-Stars if I need to.
Maniac Mansion/Crush series
Never played these games, I guess I'll try them out on whatever system I can find them for.
Panel de Pon
This is another series I've never had any experience with, so I'll likely end up with either Tetris Attack or one of the two Pokemon games.
Do Don Pachi
I've heard of this, but never played it. I'll try to find an import for the PSX or Saturn I guess.
