Unless I missed it, I'm really surprised no one has brought this up yet...

I'm a life long Penn State fan, and have been losing sleep and feeling sick over this whole thing. I also think that firing Paterno without knowing some key details was the wrong thing to do, and smacks of knee-jerk PR maneuvering in response to sensationalistic media coverage. Knowing what we know at this point, Joe deserved more deference than what he's been dealt. The whole thing is a fucking mess.

I truly feel for you as a Penn State alum.. (I'm a Rutgers alum, so it's only a matter of time before I end up in the same boat..) As an NCAA football fan, I wanted nothing less than to see a universally respected Joe Pa retire with dignity and fanfare.

Now, I only know as much about this whole fiasco as the media lets on. But I do know this: If Paterno, or anybody, regardless of tenure, position, or status, knew of what the hell was going on - they damn well should have saw to it that the authorities got involved.

C'mon, now! I love Super Mario just as much as the next person.. But if he found out that Luigi was fondling little mushroom people behind closed doors, and let it go on without speaking up - I'd ultimately pledge my eternal allegiance to a blast-processing hedgehog and some serious Cyborg Justice!

Agreed, but as of yet we DON'T know exactly what Paterno knew and what he'd been told by the GA and admins. It feels wrong to me to fire him until we know those key details, and I think he's earned the right to be given the benefit of the doubt until that comes out. He even had his Tuesday press conference canceled by admins, where he could have explained his role. The railroading of him off campus is an injustice in itself.

And I'm not an alum (though I've been to campus many times), but I grew up in PA and have watched PSU football religously for 20+ years. In fact, I attended the game last week in State College where Paterno passed Eddie Robinson - a game that will now be his last. Joe Paterno is one of the people I've always most respected in sports, and so I'm taking this hard. :(

Haha, I can sympathize. While my wife has never sunk low enough to watch the CMA's her taste in television is absolute garbage: Kardashians, Entertainment Tonight, Jersey Shore, Real World, "rich white people buy a house" nonsense on DIY, etc. She works as a doctor and says she needs to "turn her brain off" when she gets home.

We do know that the State Police have criticized him for not reporting the issue when it happened.
State Police Commissioner wrote: Paterno may have fulfilled his legal requirement to report suspected abuse by former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, state police Commissioner Frank Noonan said, "but somebody has to question about what I would consider the moral requirements for a human being that knows of sexual things that are taking place with a child."

He added: "I think you have the moral responsibility, anyone. Not whether you're a football coach or a university president or the guy sweeping the building. I think you have a moral responsibility to call us."
What puzzles me is the fact that Sandusky was still allowed to be on campus after the fact.

We talk about those often at work. I got in trouble for saying "cover my ass" because cussing is offensive. So I just started saying "put a CMA" on there, which later became, Country Music Awards.

Honestly, I forgot the CMA's were yesterday, I would have watched...

Always called those CYA's myself, maybe that will clear up confusion?
