G4TV: Yay or Nay?
Re: G4TV: Yay or Nay?
Oh, how I used to love G4. X-Play, Cinematech, Cheat!, Icons, and a boatload of video game only shows. I miss it so damn much. When I was a kid, I didn't have the same means to find out about games like I do now, so I'd always be on G4.
Cinematech showed me a whole world of games I wouldn't have found otherwise. Their zany Japanese only games episode, worst games ever, and who can forget Nocturnal Emissions?
Icons was just something I absolutely loved. A documentary show on the history of video games? Count me in. Hideo Kojima's career story, the creation and history of Megaman, it was just so informing. I felt like I learned more than I did at school.
Sigh....the good old days...

I used to watch a hell of a lot of Tech TV back in the day. It was a magical time
I think Chris Pirillo hit the nail in the head in one of his vlogs, when he said something to the effect that Tech TV was so well-received because it seemed more personal due to the limited budget, and the fact that the information you got off those shows weren't as accessible back then, and people weren't as into computers and technology so it was still pretty much a niche channel, which is a large part of its appeal.
As for hosts, I really had the hots for Sumi Das.
I also liked Cat Schwartz, but got turned off when the whole nude photo thingie happened.

Kristin Holt was so much better than Olivia and Morgan Webb.
Never really cared for G4 at all, ever. TechTV was the bomb though. Thanks for eating that channel up and then turning into SpikeTV 2.0.

Seriously, Spike and G4 should just merge - they really do feel like almost the same channel.Xeogred wrote:Kristin Holt was so much better than Olivia and Morgan Webb.

Calling it SpikeTV 2.0 would be a compliment. Spike actually has a little bit of good stuff like 80s & 90s action movies, Deadliest Warrior, TNA Impact, and Married With Children reruns (as well as Seven Days reruns, which is a personal favorite). All G4 has left is X-Play, and an occasional good movie.Xeogred wrote: Never really cared for G4 at all, ever. TechTV was the bomb though. Completely agree, when TechTV announced that they had been bought out by g4 I was disappointed, especially when they canned Call for help with Leo Laporte and I think the other show was called screen savers, great stuff. They will be missed.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.
Re: G4TV: Yay or Nay?
I loved it when it was TechTV and the very first years it was G4.
Everything after that is garbage. It became trash TV with a poorly done news show that was semi based around video games and technology, which then became a show based around Kevin's awful personality and jokes and Munn's boobs.
Even X-Play lost its charm and seemed biased...sad days.

Re: G4TV: Yay or Nay?
I was about 15 when G4 first came out and had all those amazing shows like Judgement Day, Portal, Blister, and it had all those cool little vignettes during commercials. That was awesome, it really felt like a channel for gamers.
Then they merged with tech tv and well, that was ok, at least they got X-play out of it, which was still awesome back then.
But now... man, what a bunch of shit. It's unbelievable how bad it is. just... cops. Attack of the show and X-play were still entertaining for a while, but Attack just doesn't feel the same without Olivia. And X-Play.. what happened? It's like not even the same show. There's like one review per episode, and it seems like all the humor and skits has been sucked out.
It's like they don't even know who they want to market to. They have anime now, and attack and X-play so it's like they still wanna be the nerd channel, but then they have all these godawful reality shows, and fucking cops like they wanna be another Spike. Which blows my mind cause I don't know why any channel would want to emulate Spike of all things.
So I guess... nay? I want to like G4. I miss how it used to be, I think it would still work if they threw everything they had in that direction. but they won't. It's depressing. Fuck em.

I would have loved having a video game channel back in the 8 and 16-bit days. Nowadays, there is so much excellent video game related content on Youtube, something like G4TV can't even compete. It's far too mainstream for me.
