I think this is a good read about how expensive it is just to see everything that is on the disc.

You only need one of each element type to explore all of the main campaign's content. That equals a starter pack, a three pack and two figures. That's $110. It's $20 more for each of the expansions, all of which are significantly longer than a level in the main campaign (e.g. one of the levels has a "time trial" goal of 17 minutes).

Also, that article is from someone in the UK, where the prices of this game (and probably games in general) is 50% higher than in the US.

Wow. The more I read that article, the shittier the author seems. $8 is cheap for a current licensed toy. This dude is equating buying a hefty sculpted model with standard DLC.

"But because Skylanders is a new franchise and this toy gimmick is being presented as an integral part of the gameplay experience some people are blindly accepting it as okay."

Hello, you idiot. The toys are an integral part of the gameplay experience. If this game simply had all the characters available in a menu, it would not be nearly as interesting.

"Kids" are not getting milked here. Any kid I know would be completely happy to have maybe five figures and just have their friends over with their figures and play through the game together. The only people whining are the relatively rich adults who have been trained via achievements and trophies to 100% every game they buy then cast it aside for the next game to conquer.

I just saw a Classic Game Room review of this game:

It seems like an alright game, but nothing spectacular. And the "Portal of Power" with the action figures is a total gimmick designed to rip parents off of their money.

You see "gimmick". I see, and experience, great fun. It would be like complaining about Transformers or GI Joe 25 years ago.

My girlfriend and I can't wait to play again. "Unfortunately", we have plans to play board games with our friends tonight, so I'm not sure how much we will get to play. We do have tomorrow night reserved for all night Skylanders, though. :D

Uhhh, no, that's not the same at all. Transformers and G.I. Joe were well made action figures, not cheap immovable toys used in a video game that are designed to suck money out of kids' parents. There's no reason why you couldn't do the character selection in-game. How can you not see this as the "gotta have em all" Pokemon scheme?

And if they're gonna make action figures, make better ones.

I am not going to derail the thread further, but I will say that I already pointed out that changing the character selection to a menu would render the game much less interesting. Anyone who owns and has played the game will testify to this.

There are two new three-packs being released in the coming week:
Hex, Zap, Dino-rang
Wrecking Ball, Stealth Elf, Sonic Boom

So if you don't already own these combinations and plan to buy them eventually, you can save at least $4 by waiting for a three-pack.

I really wish they would release another wind character. I'm still stuck with only Sonic Boom since there are no Targets in Canada.

Amazon has the starter pack on sale for $50.

You mentioned that the figures can be used on any system but what about the portal itself? Could you take a PS3 portal and use it on the Wii assuming that you have the Wii game disc?

How does the portal connect to the console? Via USB?

The PS3 and Wii portals are identical. They are both wireless and use a wireless USB adapter. Likewise, the PC/Mac and Xbox 360 portals are identical. They both use a standard mini-USB to USB cable.

I have not tested, nor heard of anyone using the cabled version of the portals on the Wii or PS3, but I would assume they will work.
