I'm playing Majora's Mask on an emulator, but I'm not really getting into it without a proper controller. I ordered one of the Xbox ones that should be here in a few days, so I'm pretty excited for that.

I am way into Dragon Warrior III (GBC) right now. It is so old-school and so epic (and, accordingly, so awesome). After this, I think I will try to tackle Dragon Warrior I & II. I completed Dragon Warrior IV some years ago, and I would like to have all of the 8-bit Dragon Warrior games under my belt.

I'd definitely say you should play the GBC versino of I & II. II is BRUTAL on the NES, but man was it satisfying to beat. Of course, you're really beating the RNG, since so much in II comes down to the RNG. I on the NES is just grind happy, but for every area once you reach a certain level you're pretty much guarenteed to be fine for that area.

Thanks for the tip. With my work/family schedule, it is difficult for me to play any RPG that isn't portable; so, I was planning on playing the GBC versions.

I would like to play through all of the "essential" 8-bit RPGs, and those games are definitely "essential." Once I am through those - and maybe before - I am going to attempt Final Fantasy II (GBA port) and Final Fantasy III (DS port). Obviously, those ports are significanlty different than their NES counterparts, but the portable versions are the only versions that I am likely to complete.

FFII is pretty close to the original, they just changed the battle system to be not quite so broken. But the fundamentals haven't changed. FFIII is the redo that significantly changed things; they made it so that there were less classes which were straight upgrades and instead were more of a branching path for a given combat style.

Thanks. Is there anything to recommend FFIII (NES) over FFIII (DS)? If so, I may try to emulate the NES version.

EDIT: You confirmed my understanding that FFII (GBA) is basically the same as FFII (NES), and my understanding is that DWI, DWII, and DWIII are wholly better on the GBC than the NES. That is part of the reason that I am playing the ports rather than the originals.

I couldn't get into the GBA or PSX ports of FFII, but I beat the even more refined PSP version earlier this year.

I myself couldn't get over the graphics for FFIII DS, so I just emulated the NES version and beat that as well this year. I have no idea how I beat 4 FF's back to back this year, haha. But yeah word of the wise, FFII and FFIII are mostly dungeon crawlers. People here mentioned it when I was approaching the final stretch in FFIII, but that is the most insane final dungeon ever. I am pretty sure I spent what felt like 10 hours on the game in that segment alone. There's a final dungeon to get to the final dungeon which is essentially like three dungeons in one. It's insane.

For whatever reason, I have been into difficult RPGs recently...I am serioulsy considering making a run at Wizardry (NES), but I fear it might break my will...

It was rewarding and fun. I'd recommend the NES version of FFIII even though I haven't touched the DS one so that's really biased, lol. But it was really impressive for an NES game, the OST itself was like 60 tracks or something, and it was just a huge game for the NES.

I'm playing FF3 (NES) right now and I'm really enjoying it. It has some frustrating parts, but for an 8bit RPG it ranks up there (not that I've played a ton of 8bit RPGs). FF1 and FF2 are generic and bland, but not bad. I could have lived without playing them. There are just so many improvements (in my opinion) to the third game that really make it shine.

I think I'm close to the final dungeon. All in the all I think FF3 has pretty reasonable dungeons (as far as difficulty and length go), with the possible exception of the Cave of Darkness (maybe this was just the only "annoying" dungeon so far?). But my complaints about this game are typically minor, and aren't unique to this game.
