I'd say try Star Control 2 over Starflight, as it streamlines some stuff that's rather annoying in Starflight.

With the production values of modern day RPGs I find it hard to get back to basic titles like Star Control, which I'd played ages ago anyway. There need to be more space operas. That said I am enjoying Dragon Age II so far.. Getting into the game without pre-conceived bias is serving me well.

<<spoilers>>

I sided with the mages, because the templars are authoritarian douchebags. Wish I had saved the game before the big decision though.. There's little incentive to re-play the game.

What mage blondie did with Justice was far-out, but I was expecting such a surprise on his part.

<<end spoilers>>

I am thinking of getting the first Dragon Age.. Recommendations? btw this DLC business of Bioware is ridiculous.

Well, you can get the first game + boxed expansion + DLCs for fairly cheap now with the Ultimate Edition ($30ish I think). Pretty solid deal there.

Personally, I like the first one better. It's less streamlined, though given how simplified the second one got that's not really a bad thing. In many ways it's a bigger game - more epic in scope, more and bigger areas to explore, all that.
The Awakenings boxed add-on unfortunately doesn't directly expand on the first game - you can play as your same character, but most of the companion NPCs from the main game show up in cameos, if at all. It's still fairly good, but very short - just as you think it's getting going, it ends.

Okay I'm 100% through with DA2 now. Watched the templar ending on Youtube, same difference really. The mages in this particular fantasy are blood-lusting lunatics  Thanks for the suggestions, I'll definitely be playing DA1 along with the expansion(s) :)
