Plus there's the whole fact of no longer needing memory cards and having wireless controllers.

The smoothing option looks a lot better than the PS2's smoothing option to me as well (but that could just be the HDMI talking?), and yeah, get an adapter to backup your PSX memory cards on the PS3's HDD, and you're good to go. Epic.

really? awesome.
but i need to say...
ive seen someone say 'hdmi makes the games too sharp so it exposes all of the flaws in the visuals' and that rgb or component on a ps2 is the best way to go. and apparently it upscales the ps1 games so they look really stretched out? just what i've heard.

It only stretches games if you want it to.
And frankly, with the scaling turned off (just sending the signal as 480i and letting your TV handle the rest), you really won't see much of a difference between Ps2 via component and Ps3 via HDMI.
Whether you'll think it's "too sharp" is a matter of preference I think. Some people think S-Video on SNES is 'too sharp', I don't agree. Either way, there's still the smoothing option you can play with.
One important downside to note however is that the Ps3's Ps1 compatibility is a little lower than the Ps2's. Usually this just amounts to very minor graphical glitches at most, but sometimes it can result in a game refusing to play. I'd say the vast majority of games will play just fine though.
Ps2 compatibility isn't perfect either, so it's probably not a bad idea to hold onto your old Ps1 just in case you need it.

Re: PS1 games on a PS3
People that say that are idiots. There is no such thing as too sharp! It is upscaled incredibly well, so yes it is very pixelated, but that´s just what it is. having inferior cable on ps1, ps2 or using 480i is lame. i is interlaced, keep interlaced out of your life, it sucks! It´s either 240p, 480p, 720p or 1080p. (I think the ps3 cannot do 240p, but the ps1 and ps2 can!)emurozii wrote:really? awesome.

My setup: a hd ready 50" plasma resolution: 1366X768. So I let the ps3 upscale the low res ps1 game to 1080p, then my tv downscales it back to 1366X768. Sounds crazy, but looks great. But there are lots of different ways to convert upscale. you can also turn on smoothing, which kind off makes it a bit blurrier, but at the same counter strike with sharpness on your tv. You will not be disappointed!

Really? I always felt that the PS2's smoothing option was far superior to the PS3's. The PS2 appears to smooth only the textures, preserving polygons' geometry and edge sharpness.Xeogred wrote:The smoothing option looks a lot better than the PS2's smoothing option to me as well (but that could just be the HDMI talking?), and yeah, get an adapter to backup your PSX memory cards on the PS3's HDD, and you're good to go. The PS3 appears to soften the entire picture, giving it a Vaseline-smeared look. Turning off all enhancements gives the image a very authentic Playstation 1 quality, however.
Try Project Horned Owl in the PS2 with smoothing and then try it in the PS3. You will see what I mean.

I also noticed improved framerates on many games (Omega Boost, Alien Resurrection and Tenchu feel much smoother but Alien Resurrection has a bug that renders the game unplayable after level 4).

I never use the PS1 Smoothing on the PS2 because it usually tends to add graphical artifacts to the game that aren't there with it off.wip3outguy7 wrote:Really?
