Light Gun Troubleshooting (no pun intended)

Post by eSPy »

hey everyone

recently bought a Playstation/Saturn lightgun for use with my PS2 and have not been able to make it work properly. The gun is called "The Real Arcade Light Gun" by JoyTech. It has a switch for normal and GunCon settings as well as a a/c adapter to enable recoil and a foot pedal.
Image

Hooked it all up as directed to my PS2 and (CRT) TV using standard composite cables and then booted up Point Blank. When i pull the trigger i can hear the shooting sound coming from the speakers and the recoil kicks in, but im unable to hit anything on screen.

dont think the fact that it is a PS1/saturn lightgun should make a difference...especially since im trying to play a PS1 game.

Any help or feedback would be much appreciated!

do you have one of these cables?

http://www.summitsource.com/images/products/CAVS10.jpg

I dont know if your gun came with one of these, but an official namco gun comes with a better cable. If you dont have this, you can use one of these from the pic above.

Works for both PS1 and PS2 games. You need one of these cause the gun needs to be connected to the yellow composite cable. (I am no expert, so you others here on racketboy can give the correct definition)

This splitter can make it so you can connect your gun to the yellow cable from your PS2, and still have it connect through to the TV.

Thats how I use it on my tvs and it works for me.

thanks for the reply!

the site wont let me access that link, but im guessing you are talking about this? http://www.summitsource.com/rca-ah25-3- ... -7909.html

i could be wrong, but i would have thought that this would not be necessary as the lightgun RCA connection has a passthru. (like this http://zone.bomberoza.net/Sony%20Playst ... %20_z2.jpg )

if you buy a guncon original you do get that cable, but the one I said about works in a pinch.

The original cable is long so you can place it in the back of the TV. But If you use the one that I talked about, you may have to put the composite cable in front of your tv.

From the description, the Lightgun is correctly hooked up.

1. Is the CRT a non HD 480i model?
2. Try on another non HD CRT just to be sure?
3. Calibrate the gun in the game calibration screen?

Click my CRT vs LCD signature link, there is a section on lightguns there.

I dont use (I dont have) SCPH 1160.

I just hook up the gun's yellow cable directly to the PS1's yellow and put it directly to the tv.

But it sticks out though! So make sure you dont yank it or move it.

Is your CRT a flat screen? Because lightguns aren't compatible with most flat screens. I've heard that they work with flat screen Sony Trinitron's. But I've never heard/read of any other brand flat screen CRT that they've worked with (including mine :? ).

Either method works, the SCPH 1160 keeps the lightgun wires at the console.

This can be misleading. By flatscreen if you mean HDTV or in some cases EDTV then the lightgun will not work. The Guncon 2 for example will work on an EDTV CRT when set to 480p calibration. Lightguns work on 480i CRTs curved or flat screens.

Not mine! It has component inputs but doesn't support progressive scan (480p). It's just a standard CRT flat screen and none of my lightguns work on it. I've got the brightness cranked and everything

I have a RCA TRU FLAT TV and all my light guns work with it (you can't see the tv as it's captured)
