^ Statute of limitations ran out 2 years ago for him to be charged. Total bummer, but it seems nothing can be done about that now. If she'd posted the video earlier, he could have gotten between 5-10 years. But from what I heard, there is a judicial committee looking into the matter. They have the power to take him off the bench. That would satisfy me in leu of no prosecution.

Fucking sickening. Everyone knows this man deserves to go to jail for this. And the ironic part is that if someone decides to seek justice themselves, they would end up getting punished for it.

Just another reason why laws and morals are not the same thing.

I'd rephrase it as the result of laws and morals not being the same thing. But your essential point is correct.

One pont that is bothering me: if it was this bad, why didn't she get help? I don't want that, 'she might get hurt again for doing so' type of thing. I mean seriously?
And the statue of limitations... again, if she had gotten this up quicker, there would have been no problems. I just don't see why she didn't jump on an opportunity to stop it if it was that bad.

One other thing, what Zing said about the flower, I think I know what he means. Inazuma didn't seem to understand, which makes sense. It seems to harsh a punishment for not knowing. But at 5, I personally knew not to climb on the counter. If I did anyways and knocked over flour, I would get an extra lick or two, on top of my normal punishment. I think this is what Zing is getting at.

There's a lot of hyperbole in this thread. I read the first few pages of discussion here thinking the video was something terrible.

Then I watched the video for myself.

Come one guys...seriously? You really think that's so bad? Sure, hearing a girl cry is unpleasant, but her Dad didn't hurt her that badly. She was still walking just fine at the end of that video which puts her in a better position than I was in after my parents got finished beating me for some trivial misdeed. I was regularly beaten far worse than that by my angry, violent, drunken mother and stepfather, but I grew up to be a reasonably sane adult.

As an educated man, I agree that the reinforcement methods JT prescribes are better parenting methods than the corporal punishment I endured. JT made a well thought-out argument. The rest of you seem to be arguing from emotion. You see him hurt a teenage girl, and your emotional reaction is that he should be punished too.

I hear a lot of folks calling for Adams to be prosecuted. Get real. Parents have the right to punish their children as they see fit. We don't have to agree with his methods. That was his daughter in his own household.

Just for the record, I still think Adams is a jerk. I wouldn't vote for him, but I wouldn't put him in jail either.

They most certainly do not. Child abuse has long been illegal, and thankfully so.

The psychology of abuse victims tends to cause them to be afraid of letting others know, for fear of worse abuse.

So your argument is "I got it worse and I turned out ok"? That speaks to you being lucky, not to this being an appropriate manner of child rearing.

So by your logic a parent could remove a child's pinky with a cigar cutter if they thought it would improve discipline.

One thing I would like to point out:

I personally believe that I have no call in someone's personal life unless they are family, close friends, or girlfriends. Now, through this, I believe that someone has the right to do anything they want in private, as long as they do not hurt themselves or others. If it is something not socially acceptable, then they should keep it to themselves.

So, as my parents have described since I still have yet to see it, the beating was not nearly as bad as I had imagined. I don't know how bad he hurt her, but if it didn't leave a mark or internal damage, I have no problem with it. It's his daughter, and he has the right to punish her as he sees fit.

Watch the video and tell us again that everything is perfectly acceptable. You have no idea what you are even talking about.
