Anyone else irked by lack of gamepad support?

Post by Pulsar_t »

Beside the 360 gamepad this is, which seems to have become the de facto standard in a majority of PC games, which can't be remapped. I know there's x360ce but it's a major inconvenience.. And the laughable thing is that you can't plug and play a wireless 360 pad without the proprietary receiver.

Not particularly. The PC games I play are best played with keyboard and mouse.

I barely play PC games but I experienced this problem just recently with Sonic & Sega All stars Racing. Not only is the Xbox 360 the only controller that works, but you can't customize the controls whatsoever.

You shouldn't have to go through the trouble of setting up an Xbox 360 controller emulator, just to have customizable controls, especially on the PC. It needs to stop.

I don't play a lot of games suited toward a gamepad on my PC so I haven't experienced this problem. It sounds like a pain in the ass, though.

I know I am getting tired of it! I put in GTA San Andreas (because of GTA V trailer) wait for install then I load up the game works first time no going for compatibility mode which is a good thing. I then set up the game to run at max settings and put a shortcut in so the game will play my music.

Reboot the game and start the game. WTF? I can't look with the right analog stick? Ok go to options for control pad guess what??? It doesn't recognize the right stick??

Ok, I can deal with that I'll just turn off the game and use my ps2 controller with usb adaptor..... 15 mins later I am still configuring the controller as the game goes on because of the on foot/in car controll settings.

3 hours later I decide to play Resident Evil 4 (i'll just skip the 1 hour fiasco of a install) I get the game up and running with xbox 360 wireless controller but the damn buttons don't match :x I then had to mod my Resident Evil 4 game so it will display the xbox buttons (thank you game modders!)

It's bad enough I use the mouse with my left hand so I tend to have a hard time using mouse and keyboard on my corner desk where the monitor is on the right side of me and the mouse is also on the right side because the usb cord is too short.

Half of the games I play I have to use xpadder to play them and most of the time I always have to make a profile for the game because I didn't use xpadder with them before and that's the main reason I never really played those games, you know not being able to use the mouse and keyboard because of my inability to use my right hand on the mouse

So, today I put in turning point and it's supposed to work with the xbox 360 controller but for some odd reason it doesn't see it??? No problem I'll just use xpadder spent another half hour getting the controls to how I liked them.

I bought this darned gaming computer and 40 games all on the same day around 2007, of those 40 games I have only played 1 of them for more than 5 hours and the rest I don't think you could add them up and get a 5 hour total.

Today I think I am going to install Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl what are the odds I will have zero problems?

I may also install Return to Castle Wolfenstein (I know this will have to use xpadder) eh, sad thing is PS3 is just a computer in console form.

I just need a break from my consoles which is why I am playing my pc games.

Sorry for the rant but this topic just compelled me to actually post something and not lurk for once.

I assume it has to do with Windows Vista/7? Did Microsoft remove support for standard gamepads using a game port or USB? The last time I used a PC, my USB Saitek P880 gamepad was literally plug and play.

I don't know about game port, since that got phased out a decade ago, but Windows itself still supports various USB controllers. I use my PS3 arcade sticks when I boot up MAME. But I think many modern games don't have arbitrary control support; instead they have keyboard, mouse, and 360 controller. I believe the 360 controller is handled in Windows special, while gamepads and joysticks are all lumped under a single category, and the devs don't bother supporting it. Don't forget, these are the same devs who decided that supporting two keys to a single action (as was standard for PC games) is too much effort.

I'm irked by the lack of Analog support in older PS1 games. In playing PS1 Pre-Dual Shock Final Fantasy 7, I use an Interact Barracuda controller which allows the analog sticks to work in place of the Gamepad. I wonder if there are modern controllers that can do the reverse?

No, it's not a problem with Windows, but with the game developers who are too lazy to implement decent customizable controls of any kind.

Yeah I have no issues with this. I use my 360 wired controller for things and a USB adapter I got that can support 2 PS2 controllers, use that for all my emulation.

This I have an issue with though. Even on consoles, I loved how you couldn't edit a single thing in the new Deus Ex. You could view the controller layout in the menu, but as far as I saw you couldn't change anything about it.
