Even in a college town they're considered weird? I've never been to Auburn so I don't know. The only vegetarian restaurants close to my area are in Athens but there are freaks aplenty there too. I know exactly what you're talking about though. We're transplants to the South by way of Michigan so a bit out of place in a lot of ways. (I'm not disparaging this part of the country at all- we've been here 11 years and love it - just aware of some regional differences.)

I could never eat something that I watched die. I've never been able to get past that.

5'5" ~115. It fluctuates. I'm really short, so I'm not actually that skinny.

I'm of the mind that if you can't deal with killing (or at least raising) the animal that you're going to consume, then you probably shouldn't be doing it. You're better off not eating that meat anyway.

Ha. You guys wouldn't be able to make it in south Louisiana, then. Aside from the generic crawfish boils, we also have something called a boucherie. Basically, a heavily populated Cajun family (or community) buys a live pig of substantial size, slaughters it (in front of the kids if they want to see!!! Woo-hoo!), and prepares it in every way imaginable.

I was a chef for about 8 years, so they decided to put me to work doing some of this stuff. Having dealt with raw meat and other similar cooking ingredients before, I had no problem helping. It did freak me out a little that the meat I was cutting was still warm with life, however.

Lets not forgot what we eat as well, everything from alligator to squirrel. Alligator sausage is delicious.
