I kicked level 7's ass!

Here's a rundown on the Turok series, according to me:
The first game is absolutely fantastic. I firmly believe it should be on Racket's list of N64 games that still matter today. FPS games have progressed a lot since then, but this game is still very unique. The levels are mostly jungle-like. Though you do find yourself in caves a lot too, and some times other locations not normally seen in FPS games. And it's the only FPS that I know of where you can swim in and under water.
The music really sets the mood of the game, very tribal sounding. So you're a Native American running through the jungle, and you start the game off with a knife and a bow and arrows. But then you pick up a pistol, a shotgun, an assault riffle. You'll eventually get a grenade launcher and rocket launcher. And if that wasn't enough, there's a bunch of alien weapons as well. From a plasma riffle to some weird gun that fires some sort of mini nuclear explosion.
Each levels has a certain amount of keys you need to find. The keys unlock further levels. In addition to that, each level has a piece of a super weapon, that's completely optional to find or not. So there's a good deal of exploration, setting it far apart from a typical FPS. There's lots of hidden stuff in each level, making it fun to explore. In this respect, I think you could compare it to Metroid Prime. So if you're a fan of the N64, a fan of FPS, and wanna try something a little different, I would highly recommend this game.
The second game in the series, Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, I have yet to play. I was thinking about giving it a go next. I've watched my brother play this game a great deal though. I think they improved upon a lot of things. The game makes use of the expansion pak, so the graphics are a little better. The music in the first level is very catchy, so I would assume the music in the game overall is decent. A complaint about the first game, the fog, seems to have been addressed. Often times in the first game, the fog gives you a very claustrophobic feeling. In Turok 2, level 1 seems wide open by comparison. The only real complaint I've heard about 2 is that a lot of times there's a great distance of time between save points. So you have to be willing to sit and play for at least an hour. But again, it's a FPS with exploration aspects. The first Turok could have a good distance between saves, but it didn't seem hard, so I take this complaint with a grain of salt. The game has more of a story in it, with cut scenes too.
After that, it seems like they tried to make a Quake or Unreal clone with Turok: Rage Wars. Rage Wars focused on multiplayer action. I heard it isn't a bad multiplayer, but it seems like THIS is where the series starts to become more like traditional FPS.
Turok 3: Subtitle Unknown By Me. I haven't played this one yet either. Watching some videos of it though, it looks more like a traditional FPS. To me, the thing that made the first one great was how unique the whole thing was. Bow and arrows, tribal music, jungles. From what I've read though, it's still suppose to be a fun game. Maybe if I get through Seeds of Evil, I'll give this one a try some time.
After that, there's was Turok Evolution on the Gamecube and PS2. I played it for about 30 minutes when it first came out and was unimpressed. I have it for PS2 now, I'll probably give it shot one day. Then there's "Turok" for the current gen. I haven't read anything about it, but I remember when it came out. I was really happy because at the time I was sick of hearing about the new Call of Duty that's out and the new Halo that's coming out. When I heard Turok came out, I remembered my thoughts of the first Turok game and was very happy. Finally, a FPS shooter that is maybe a little different! I hope it doesn't suck.
So there you have it. The first one is gold from my own experience. The second one is probably just as good, if not better. Anything after that
might be OK. But from the looks of it, the series really fell away from what it was all about after the first two games.
