I just want some clarification here, you seriously think it's completely acceptable to beat your own children into submission with a belt if they're misbehaving? I certainly don't have any parenting experience, but I think I would be able to come up with ways a bit more logical and civil to punish my kids. Resorting to violence to deal with misbehavior just seems very unintelligent and primitive. Shows that the parent has no patience, amongst other things.
I think a firm-tempered form of discipline (spanking) is more than appropriate - I think it's essential. If you're insinuating my patience runs so thin, that at the drop of a hat I'm ready to thrash a child for so much as spilling their milk...you're mistaken. Certainly there's a time and a place for every thing. A child is just that, a child. A parent needs to exercise his/her authority over the child. I don't believe spanking (in the correct manner) will give the child some sort of inferiority complex, or turn them into an enraged serial killer if the punishment is doled out early, consistently, and in a spirit of loving correction.

Again, I don't expect anyone here to agree with me, and for good reason. That's fine.

Which part? The part where many people in here apparently share the sexist view that "Grandmother/Mother/Wife/Girlfriend/Daughter" are the only ones who deserve empathy? I agree.

There's a difference between spanking and beating. Using the palm of your hand is more than enough to get the point across.

You're implying I'm being sexist, which is far from the truth. My statement was based on a man beating a woman. Same applies to women abusing women, men abusing men, etc.

I stop the line at Cobra vs. Mongoose violence. That makes for good tv.

I can see where you're coming from, and I'm happy to agree to disagree. Like many other here, I was on the receiving end of quite a few nasty beatings throughout my childhood, and it did much more bad than good. It was your comment about the belt being okay that riled me up a bit. Using weapons to inflict pain and instill fear into your child is a completely different thing. There's just no reason for that, ever.

I’m not saying that a spanking with the hand isn't effective or sufficient. I am saying that a spanking with an instrument of force, such as a belt, is more effective.

Excellent post, JT. My mother studied psychology and sociology in college, so much of what you posted sounds pleasantly familiar. THIS is how I was raised. My parents never laid a violent hand on me and I think I turned out the way I did because of it.

I really enjoyed your post JT!

My older brother is studying Behavioral Psychology right now, so he's always talking about stuff like that. He's actually interning for some semi-famous Behavioral Psychologist at Penn State. He has some pretty interesting stories of kids he works with.

If you raise your child right, you shouldn't need to spank them at all. Talk to them like an adult and explain things to them so they have a good understanding. It's also important to encourage them to talk back to you. Hitting them will make them hide things from you and hate your guts.
