Same as me. Most people consider the SCPH-900X to be the most stable PS1 you can buy.

I bought a chip from here about a year ago.

It comes from thailand.So it takes a little while.You also have to use their wire diagram from the site.

maybe. i cannot make my own PSX chips as i do not have a pic programmer but if you provide a chip and the install guide i can install it.

I use swapmagic on my PS2 but can the PS2, when chipped, play PS1 games as well?

swapmagic will not boot PSX backups, most PS2 modchips do though
