I have actually heard this, and it made me groan then just as it makes me groan now.
It's time to tell you the story you HAVEN'T been told. Back in 1987 Games Workshop realize that people were getting tired of the fantasy genre. However, their attempts to create a good setting for a space-based miniatures game wer failures. Then, pioneering technology that would later be perfected in Back to the Future Part II, they travelled to 1998 in order to see if anyone had come up with a good sci-fi setting. They found Starcraft.

I'll let this pass, but only because it starred Michael J. Fox.

Well played popo.

The story I have heard was that Blizzard made Warcraft and approached Games Workshop to get the Warhammer nod. They being GW said maybe then later said no and Blizzard said well we are going to release it anyway and we had Warcraft. Later, when they were making a Scifi version of Warcraft, they approached GW again and asked for the 40k nod, they again said no and we had Starcraft.

I dont know how true that is, but it is very believable. GW is just a hard company to work with. If it doesnt sell more models, they dont want it - note the BGG purge.

I was trying not to go into wireframes and vector graphics, but if you want to be specific, than I, Robot was the first 3D polygonal game.
