Best Dreamcast sports games discussion thread
Ok, I made similar threads for GameCube, PS2 and PS3 so far, so is anyone shocked at this one? Funny thing! I don't even like sports games that much. Which is why these threads are interesting to me. It's kind of cool to find certain games that stand out for one reason or another. So as with the other threads I invite you to not just list titles of games but rather to tell us WHY a certain game stands out, and of course pictures help.
Looking for the best/most interesting/etc sports games for:
Baseball
Basketball
Football
Golf
Hockey
Soccer
Tennis
Volleyball
Am I missing anything? I personally don't group racing/car games in the sports category. Simulation vs arcade is up to you -- an awesome game is an awesome game.

I am not sure what all there is other than the 2K series on DC, which is generally decent. There's a few Blitz titles also, and, um...yeah I don't really think of the DC as a sports console as EA didn't publish titles for it and sports games were generally not big sellers on the system.

Maybe more helpful..
Baseball - 2K series
Basketball - 2K series
Football - 2K series
Golf - I think Tee Off Golf is the only US game, which is kinda meh from what I recall
Hockey - 2K series
Soccer - I don't think there are any US games, don't know how the imports are.
Tennis - Virtua Tennis series, obviously
Volleyball - this is all i found http://www.dreamcast-scene.com/communit ... php?t=2883

Re: Best Dreamcast sports games discussion thread
I'm under the impression that Virtua Tennis is a bit of a cult-classic DC title. Believe it or not the only game I've played in the series is the GBA port (unless you count Sega Sports Tennis on PS2 -- which is an obvious continuation).

I also realized that several of the Pro Yakyuu Team baseball games were released on DC in Japan, which I'd definitely like to give a try:

I have no idea how good or bad NHL 2K2 is as the series has always had its ups and downs. But I do find it interesting that this was the last US DC game released (not counting later independent releases of course).

I'm your huckleberry...
As Dave noted, EA didn't want to play on the dreamcast so we got original AWESOME games from the 2K series.
NFL 2K / NBA 2K series = leaps ahead of anything else out at the time.
NCAA 2K2 - only college game released. Is just a skin of the NFL 2K engine but has all the teams.
Tennis - Virtua Tennis is great and I played it so much my DC controller button won't decompress. I never played the second one but have it.
Soccer - Virtua Striker was a domestic US release. I'm not a big soccer guy and don't believe I ever played my copy.
NHL - Sega skipped a year (2001 does not exist) and as you noted 2K2 is the last game released officially and it's very good. The original 2K had room for improvement but since EA didn't bring their titles over, this was it.
NFL Blitz '99 and 2000 are perfect arcade ports.
Golf - I do believe Tee Off is it for golf games.
WWF Royal Rumble - only unique wrestling game released. It's arcade-y but generally got underwhelming reviews. Acclaim also ported all their dated WWF and ECW games over to the DC (using the WWF Attitude engine).

I left off Baseball -
SEGA took forever to release a baseball game and 2K1 was pretty underwhelming but it was it for the system. I was playing Triple Play on the psx as an alternative.

Wrestling - Firepro D - it is a Japanese import but so worth it. Best wrestling game on the console, and one of the best ever created. The CAW feature alone is enough to suck your life away.
American Football - NFL 2k1 - VMU play calling. NFL2k was my favorite, but 2k1 fixed some of the issues 2k had with weather effects and some of the weird bugs.
Even more American Football - Blitz 2000 (its 4 player) - nothing else needed to be said.
Basketball - NBA 2k - 2k1 did not add a whole lot (but I figure both are about the same price nowadays).

Took me 1.5 hours to respond - off my game todaynoiseredux wrote:THERE YOU ARE! I was wondering what was keeping you from this thread.
I have a number of dupes, especially of the NBA 2k series. I know they're cheap elsewhere, but they are yours if you want them (no charge of course - sharing the love).
Re: Best Dreamcast sports games discussion thread
Fuck EA Sports lol! But seriously, Sega and VC did an amazing job filling the void in the sports category, so much so, that they loomed over primarily the Madden series up to 05 and killed the NBA live series LOL! Anywho, great sports titles to be had on DC if we count xtreme sports!
