I first heard shmup in 06 when I was talking to a friend about the Touhou Project. I called them shooters until the late 90s when FPS's took that title, and started calling them shumps. I was told very fiercely that they are called shmups and that no one will take your seriously if you say shump.

Shumps just rolled off my tongue one day and I still think it sounds alot cooler than shmup.
