So who decided to start calling shooters "shmups"?

Like it or not, "shooter" belongs to the FPS genre now. If I use the term around even my seasoned gamer friends, they instantly think I'm talking about Call of Duty or the likes.

I think I'm glad not to have any friends who are modern gamers.

Yes, on account of my own experiences. Shooters to me always indicate the whole genre, and given the relative paucity of FPS's in the retro years compared to shmups or run-n-guns, it seems counterintuitive that it as a minor genre should become indicative of a whole class of genres.

How are they "modern gamers" if they spend the majority of the time playing classic games? Aren't they then "retro gamers" that play the occasional modern game?

For the record, I say "shmup" and "fps" in conversation. I don't think I've actually referred to either as just "shooter".

I considered myself a retro gamer before I ever knew about sjmups, so if someone had said shooter to me, I'd have thought fps/3rdps
