I don't know if you'd consider this or not, but maybe asking some of the members here living in Japan if they could hook you up with a grey Saturn console might be a good idea.

The guide rail is that metal rod that the number 2 arrow is pointing at. Mine was jutting too far out of the white plastic thing that's holding it in place at the top of the picture, so I gently pushed it back into place. However, I remember when it was out of place, the Saturn would make strange noises due to the drive not moving properly on the rail, so I still feel like a loose or broken ribbon cable is your culprit.

Just to give credit where it is due, the picture belongs to segastyle.com. I just found it on Google Images looking for a good pic of the CD drive.
