Overlooked/Underrated Horror Games

Post by Blurz »

Since it's Halloween-ish time, and since I love horror games, I figured I would start yet another thread, this time about underrated/overlooked horror games. (horror used loosely) System doesn't matter really, in this sub-forum as the cool cats browse it. 8)

My vote goes to Mansion of Hidden Souls on Sega Saturn and Sega CD.
It is more what you would expect to find on the pc than a console. I haven't played it in quite a few years, but if I remember corrrectly, it is relatable to Amber: Journeys Beyond and most (if not all) the characters are portrayed as butterflies. It isn't strictly a horror game, just has a few horror themes but enough that I would qualify it as a horror game.

Best horror game in my mind is still Sweet Home (Famicom).
Uninvited (NES) is pretty grizzly as well.
The pirate Pokemon Black cart would be cool if it were true.
Abadox (NES) got fairly gory at times.
My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.
Still, don't forget to tip your waitress.

Realms of the Haunting (PC, 1996) is very scary and often overlooked, but it has a strong cult following. If you haven't played it before, check out these links:

Here are some of my picks:

Harvester

Image

A very creepy and disturbing horror game for the PC. It's about a guy that wakes up in a town called Harvest, he can't remember a thing and he finds out that the town is a bit fucked up (FFS even kids get killed). It's kind of rare and setting it up with DOSBox is a nightmare but it's so worth it.

The Dark Eye

Image

A terrifying point and click game about 3 Edgar Allan Poe stories (Leonora, The Cask Of Amontillado and The Tell-Tale Heart), you play as both the killer and the victims, it's pretty insane. This comes with a twist: PUPPETS, which don't move their mouths even when they speak, making something creepy into something that's going to leave you sleepless for months.

Alien Resurrection

Image

A pretty cool and claustrophobic FPS based on Alien: Resurrection. Unlike the movie the game is pretty good and it's very tough.

Kuon all the way. Criminally under-rated. If you're a fan of Japanese horror you need to play it.

If you are patient (I had to install Windows XP mode on my W7 PC) and have a decent ammount of cash (I got my copy for 25 bucks 1-2 years ago, it was worth it but it's getting pricier) then get it, it's a really awesome game.

I've always wanted to play that game, is it true that's basically RE on feudal Japan with magic instead of firearms?

Alien Trilogy on Saturn has a pretty good dark atomsphere, and quite a few moments which can startle the player.

Personally, I enjoyed Kuon more than any RE I've ever played. :)
