Because it gives you easy access to a large number of other keys. The arrow keys are pretty isolated. Additionally, many earlier keyboards didn't have the arrow keys in the nice cross we have now, but they were four in a row.

That said, I don't use WASD, but I have a really weird setup that I developed myself when I decided to start using the mouse in the Quake 2 days. I use right click as move forward, S and G as strafe, and D and F as move backwards.
WASD was derived by WASZ which was frequently used in games on older pcs that did not have arrow keys (or was used for second player). Lode Runner on the Apple II used WASZ as its primary controls (and foolishly used Q for quit so often people would quit while in the middle of the game). The first game that I know of to use WASD was Wizardy in 1981, but Quake was the first game to really make it popular.

Right click to move forward is not that rare actually. When I was on the tournament PC gaming scene I ran into alot of people that used that. Most of them were big Descent players though.

I know this, it is all that other perverted shit he does that bothers me....and putting it all together.

I feel nauseous just thinking about it. Before you know it we'll have people playing FPSs games using touch controls.

I dislike touch controls for fps titles. But the most convoluted control scheme I have seen is rdfg&ijkl. A good buddy of mine and Ack's played alot of competitive Tribes 2 and got to the point where he could multibox the game if they were playing with commanders.

Then again I did enter a UT2k4 tournament using a dance pad and a wiimote, so Im not right in the head to begin with...

Hell, Doom's original mouse binding was left right is turn left right, mouse forward back is forward back, mouse 2 is forward, mouse 1 is fire, mouse 3 is strafe (hold and left right).

Doom had original mouse bindings? I never played it with a mouse when it was released, and other than some playing with GLDoom, never have.

WTF, lol.

Interestingly enough Ultima Underworld has kind of a weird almost WASD like setup, instead of the arrows it used those keys, although A and D are used for turning instead of strafing. It works for that game though.

Also Call of Pripyat runs like crap on my PC, figured it would I guess. Even on low it just seems to stutter too much. I'll play a little more to see if it gets better, but yeah probably not. It already looks like this game renders way bigger maps than the first Stalker, so that might be killing it for me. Still got it for dirt cheap, so something to look forward too someday...
