So, the difference is in a bunch of cheap condiments? Yet the neo geo is vastly more expensive than the nes/genesis/most nec?

I think I'll remain a weenie :P
Psh, that's so inattentive. They clearly spread a shitload of Beluga caviar underneath that hotdog, so it's now worth like 2,000 bucks.

I was debating over the last week about buying a Neo Geo CD and I just can't justify it, especially considering my favorite SNK series is Metal Slug. I could get a nice Hori Tekken arcade stick and Metal Slug Anthology for the PS2 for the fraction of the cost of a Neo Geo, let alone ALL the Metal Slug games for it.

I certainly wouldn't mind owning one, and I always play the MVS at Level 7 when I go there. However, it's just a lot of money for what really is a limited library filled with little of anything but fighters.

I was actually considering starting a Neo-Geo collection too last week and then when I came here and read the 101 article about it and saw all the 0's I was like "eff this".

Seems like a cool system though if you're REALLY good at fighters. I like fighters but I'm not the kind of person who can devote that much time to mastering them...or the money for that matter.

Neo Geo is awesome but you pretty much have to be rich to collect for it. Emulation is a fine alternative but you do miss out on the physical aspect of it. Neo Geo cartridges are massive.

The only thing I'd recommend a Neo Geo CD for is to play the Samurai Shodown RPG on it. Otherwise you should go with one of the ports to a later system or get an AES/MVS. And if you're considering both of those, ask yourself if you'd be willing to purchase a JAMMA arcade cabinet. If not, then you probably don't want the Neo Geo, which is a subset of that.

Gees you guys.

The Neo CD isn't THAT bad. The load times on the older games (up to maybe 1995 or 6, depending on genre/game) are really not much worse than the Sega CD and some PS1 games. It is also affordable. The system will not break your bank, and neither will the games. If you want to get an SNK system, but aren't worried about having EVERY "must have" game, then go for the Neo CD. The original Metal Slug is even reasonably priced on it. There is definite fun to have and you can still own a Neo Geo this way.

If you spent a bit more, you can totally get an AES and not go broke. Stick to the older games, like KoF '94 or '95, Samurai Shodown I or II, older Fatal Furys, some of the older sports games, etc., and you can easily get a system with a dozen or so games for a few hundred dollars. Just do not even think of getting any Metal Slugs, unless you want to start thinking in the 4-digits.

As has been said, MVS is cheaper if you want those "must haves." It is the most expensive in the long term, but the cheapest way to get cartridge Neo Geo games in the long term by FAR.

So, if you are on somewhat of a budget, you can still get a Neo Geo CD system or an AES (if you limit the games you get). Don't let that talk of "it's so expensive" scare you away. It does not have to break your bank!

As awesome as it would be to own one, any Neo Geo system is at the bottom of the list for me. If I miss out on Samurai Showdown RPG, so be it. I think I'd get a 360 or PS3 before getting a Neo Geo system. Then again, I'm just not that big a fan of most fighters.

Windjammers, Metal Slug, Neo Bomberman, great, but still...I'm willing to MAME the good ones if it means I don't spend hundreds of dollars for the best games.

Perhaps the OP can purchase Neo Geo CD games and play them on a PC using an emulator?
