The smaller PSone was pretty reliable in my experience. I rarely have any need to hook it up though.

I'm pretty sure you could count the number of notable sprite-based 2D n64 games on one hand, and even then the only really worthwhile one is Mischief Makers.

It's a shame really imo, because the n64's d-pad happens to be nice, large and comfy.
Once again I mention Ogre Battle as a sprite based 2D game.

Blame me for mainly thinking of side-scrollers.

Yeah, but that is an exception! There really honestly is not much of a 2D selection on the 64.

Nothing against Zelda: OoT. That really is a personal preference based on my lack of experience with it. I say I prefer Zelda III, but I really haven't spend enough time with OoT to say much about it.

For 2D games the N64 is... well... has allmost nothing i can just think on paper mario (and i think that is just good nothing to blow my mind). BUT for the platforming games... that's the reason why i love the N64... but the super nintendo beat any console any time :P

If we're talking about great 2D games for the N64, we can't forget Mischief Makers. Easily one of the best games on the system.

For platforming? The Genesis/MD is also very good here. I'd put them as pretty much even, as it really comes down to personal taste I think. The PC Engine has a lot here, but I really think the quality of the SNES/MD selection here is of higher quality overall. Lots on the NES, too.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles or Super Mario World.... hmmmmm both rock!

As for Mischief Makers on the N64, I honestly didn't really get into it. It didn't grab my attention when trying it out, and that was the end of that.

The very fact that you don't know that you said that says volumes about you having judged a system without having known much about it.

Nope. I didn't own a 64 until 4 years or so ago. Goldeneye, Mario Kart, Mario Golf, Rogue Squadron, F-Zero X, Ocarina, Harvest Moon, Robotron 64 are all fantastic games that hold up well whether you're nostalgic or not.
Well there's exceptions to every claim, idk.

I guess I'm just noticing that most of the n64 bashers are ones who checked the system out long after its heyday.
I never touched an N64 until '06, and I'm one of Racketboy's biggest N64 fans, so I'm another exception. Admittedly, I'm a huge 3D platformer lover, so that helps.

I'll admit N64 has almost zero good 2D sprite-based games, but that's why you shouldn't sell your SNES to finance an N64 purchase. If you buy both, you get the best of both worlds.
