Congrats! That is a major achievement. From your posts, one can tell there is a lot of inner thought process. You gotta start working on making your Doctor signature illegible though. :D

@luke: I will be PhD, not PsyD. This is a clinical-scientist program, so in addition to all of the clinical work I've done, there is a heavy emphasis on conducting scientific research that can be applied to the clinical area.

That's still great. I'm guessing with your degree you're not planning on actually being a practicing psychologist (not trying to be condescending at all) but rather conducting research for those who do practice to better their results. At least that is my understanding of your degree.

Either way, it's a great achievement, and I can only hope for your continued success. Will your dissertation be added to the Congressional library? I'm not exactly sure how that process works, but if you're looking for something to put you to sleep, you can find my Sister's dissertation in the Library of Congress; the title is: Hyperfemininity, Gender-Role Discrepancy, and Eating Disorders in Varying High School Environments (2003).

The PsyD is a professional degree that is meant to be more-or-less equivalent to a PhD, but with more of a focus on the clinical work than the science. PsyDs still have a dissertation, but I don't believe it is generally quite as intense research-wise. Both degrees allow you to practice afterwards, but the PhD leaves you open to more academic options after you graduate.

And actually, I do want to be a practicing psychologist. I started out being really into research, but I kind of burned out a bit. I really enjoy teaching and clinical work though. I won a distinguished teaching award this year too, and for years I have trained directly with the people that developed some of the treatments I am most interested in using in practice. I maintain a few academic aspirations for the science of psychology, but I think those might turn to the private sector rather than the ivory towers.

So every night I have this recurring dream involving my best friend and a kiddie pool of bratwurst. What might it mean?

Is the kiddie pool made of bratwurst or is it full of bratwurst? This is very important.

Many congratulations, this is a major accomplishment, as you well know! Thanks for serving as an example that it can be done. I've been working on my own dissertation in medieval history in my free time while I work a "real job" these past few years. Next time I find time to get to a drinking establishment I'll have a pint in your honor.

Congrats!
