realism is overrated. I like unrealistic stuff. If I want realism. I´ll go take a walk outside.
It´s all about gameplay. Not to say that gameplay suffers from realism......, but it does because those devs focus too much on realism and detail and screw the gameplay anyway.
Well, call me mad, bit I like good gameplay.
Bad gameplay, whored out graphics, you are for the casual gamer.

You keep making these generalizations about eastern and western games. Not all western games look realistic and not all eastern games are better. World of Warcraft doesn't look realistic and rape simulators don't fit into your generalizations.Inazuma wrote:I completely agree that unrealistic games are more fun than realistic ones. I've played loads of Japanese games that are total garbadge. Sure on older consoles I'll admit some game slooked better with big cartoon sprites that filled up the screen but that is down to limitations. Today a lot of games like those just feel like generic copy and paste jobs of old games because they were made that way by choice, not by limits.

World of Warcraft looks very ugly to me. All Blizzard games do. Western style art in general is very ugly to me.Hobie-wan wrote:You keep making these generalizations about eastern and western games. Ugly or not, it's not at all realistic.Inazuma wrote:World of Warcraft looks very ugly to me. All Blizzard games do. I dislike how WoW looks in-game as well. The stylization doesn't come across very well. Concept art looks nice, but the game itself is pretty bleh.World of Warcraft looks very ugly to me. All Blizzard games do. Western style art in general is very ugly to me.
That said, "western" art is an extremely broad topic, and technically speaking the anime style is derived from it (Betty Boop, early Disney). I don't dislike it, but I don't think there's a clear better or worse there as compared to more typical western comic art, fantasy art, whatever.
One thing I'd say there is that - particularly with slightly older games - more western titles tried to use shitty looking 3D renders instead of nice hand-drawn portraits, whereas more Japanese titles stuck with the anime look. Personally, I prefer that too. I'm just not going to generalize an entire region's art based on stupid art team decisions in the 90s though.

Looks wise, on 3D games, I like them either way out there, or for the more realistic games strong, but still stylized. One example I love is the new Batman Games (Arkhum Asylum, Arkhum City) they look real enough to give a good mood and setting, but far enough off that you can easily distend belief and pull off impossible things without being obvious.
Gameplay wise, I again like a mix. Way out there games are always fun, but I like realistic games. COD, I do not consider realistic, I consider that crap. Games like Battlefield, they have a factor of realism that they are trying to hit, and ignoring the fact they are all based on multiplayer, pull off the realism. Games like No More Heroes, that are way out there, somewhat random, and mix things up, are great.

Izzy, you're comparing Apples and Trout here. Not every Western game is a brown-and-bloom iron sight generic shooter. The Assassin's Creed games are Western, and absolutely beautiful.Inazuma wrote:I completely agree that unrealistic games are more fun than realistic ones. Super Mario World looks much better than Call of Duty to me. I know that CoD is far more graphically advanced but it looks extremely fucking ugly to me. Super Mario World also destroys CoD in the gameplay department as well.

The graphics are great but it looks very ugly, realistic and boring to me. I'd much prefer a fantasy world where you play as a cute anime girl and kill monsters with over the top magic spells and giant swords.
This game on the PSP has shitty graphics but it manages to look way better to me. It makes Assassin's Creed look brown and gray in comparison.
Video games can be anything, so why not go overboard and make them really crazy and fun, instead of realistic and boring?
