It had Ys (lets not get into that debate) and Miracle Warriors too.Nemoide wrote:Master System didn't have the strongest RPG library, but at least Phantasy Star and Ultima IV are absolute classics. (not the Ultima IV is exclusive...)

On Star Tropics, I agree with you. The others are undeniably ARPGs, which is a subcategory of RPGs, not a totally separate category.Breetai wrote:Can games like Crystalis, Star Tropics, Zelda II and Ys (did nobody mention this?) really be called RPGs? You are correct. Traditional RPGs are played with dice and paper.Maybe you might call them action-RPGs, but they are certainly not traditional RPGs.

Really traditional RPGs are played with just an imagination (and possibly a blanket cape).

In all honesty, it's really the same thing. The dice and paper are just there to help in resolving the age old "I got you!" "No you didn't!" scenario.J T wrote:Really traditional RPGs are played with just an imagination (and possibly a blanket cape).

Did I post in that thread?pepharytheworm wrote:Yes they can be called RPGs, which has already been proven because several members called them that.Breetai wrote:Can games like Crystalis, Star Tropics, Zelda II and Ys (did nobody mention this?) really be called RPGs?![]()
Now whether they should be called RPGs is another matter that we already have a thread for.
Leveling up means it is in the RPG category? Hmmm, okay. I can buy that.flamepanther wrote:On Star Tropics, I agree with you. I grew up playing Dragon Warrior, and obviously FF1 is up there...also gotta have some love for Zelda II and Castlevania II.
Something I didn't discover until I was about ~17 was 100 World Story, an awesome little J-only multiplayer boardgame-style-RPG with randomized maps. Super fun game.

Crystalis is one of the best real-time action RPGs of all time.
Dragon Warrior III and IV are fantastic, the first two are a bit too tedious for my taste.
Final Fantasy is fun, but the newer ports (Origins and Dawn of Souls) really improved on a lot of things that brought down the original game.
Can't say I ever liked Phantasy Star that much. It's a beautiful looking game, but a chore to play through.

Final Fantasy Adventure > Final Fantasy Legend
Re: What are your favorite 8-bit era RPGs?
Phantasy Star would have probably been my top game if I had known about it back then. The first Phantasy Star title I played was 3. Which is why I don't think it's a bad game LOL.
The first RPG I played was Dragon Warrior. I had no idea what the game would be about since I got it with the Nintendo Power subscription for free. Once I started playing I was totally into it. I kept imagining what each town would have. What kind of enemies the area around it would hold. It was a great experience. Once I finished the game I started to work on finishing the game in the lowest level possible and just gave it some replay. At one point I defeated the Dragon Lord with the princess in arms to see what would happen. At another I would leave her in the dungeon. Fun memories... Then the rest of the series came out each one better than the other some of the most fun I ever had with RPGs.
Crystalis was another game that just kept me playing. I loved how the setting was the future but everything was medieval like. The part with the Dolphin was just wow! back then. It took me forever to be able to damage the emperor ( I was missing an upgrade). That part with the destroyed town made me sad
Great memories from that game too.
Faxanadu was another game that to me was crazy epic. I still remember how during and after the towns with the fog or smog I felt so alone in my quest. I still remember and feel the eeriness of those dark parts of the game. The idea of the whole game taking place on a tree was just amazing.
Final Fantasy was another game I loved but I had already played other RPGs. It was a great fun game that I spent many hours using different teams. The thing I remember though is spending so much time buying potions one by one.
