The first one's from that mega-troll Sega Slayer, but the second one is fascinating:

Honestly, this is pretty much exactly how I feel about the situation, although I'm self-aware enough not to phrase it in such a sensationalist way. As much as I love video games, I've felt completely disillusioned with the industry since it changed so drastically after the turn of the millennium (the last console I purchased outright was the Xbox so I could play Panzer Dragoon Orta and OutRun 2; I fixed an abandoned Xbox 360 fairly recently, but just couldn't bring myself to care). I know I'm missing out on some fantastic stuff on Sony's platform, but I can't bring myself to support them either. Nintendo's largely innocent other than some bullshit in the late 80's/early 90's, but they're such a caricature of themselves that I've honestly never been able to take them very seriously.
Clearly, I don't expect that most people feel this strongly about the situation, but I was curious as to the response that this analysis of the Sega-Sammy merger would create amongst retro gamers like ourselves. Am I a sap for thinking this guy speaks the gospel?

You and I seem to disagree on modern stuff (I don't have a problem with Xbox, and I certainly have a lot more distaste for Sony than you do) but as for this entry on Sega itself?Original_Name wrote:The first one's from that mega-troll Sega Slayer, but the second one is fascinating:

It's fucking Urban Dictionary. Nothing on that site matters, at all.
Plus I just can't take anything seriously when it has to constantly use rape metaphors for everything.
Honestly I was thoroughly annoyed by both of those top answers.

Re: Opinions on Urban Dictionary's Definition for "Sega"
^Yeah, I've been pretty hostile about Microsoft on here. I went overboard, but I have a tendency to be more harsh than I should be to try and make up for other peoples' complacency, y'know? I dislike Microsoft and Sony about equally -- the only real difference is that Sony actually has two internal teams that I legitimately regard as genuinely astonishing artists (Team ICO and thatgamecompany), whereas Microsoft has none. I still dislike Sony, but those teams (which, compared to the way Nintendo, for instance, is structured, would be more like second-party developers) in and of themselves embody what I love most about video games.
With modern gaming in general, I just find myself asking, "What are we doing here?" The modern model that Microsoft employs isn't so bad if you expect a company to act as an outlet for games -- gaming's Wal-Mart --but I just find it unreal that this is what gamers wanted. Why did we, as a public, choose corporatism over creativity? I understand that companies have the right to be boring and lazy, but why would someone actually support it?
Anyway, the only thing in that Urban Dictionary that I disagree with is the stuff like "SEGA's death is a microcosm of the situation in Occupied Palestine, Tibet, Aceh, et al. SEGA's death is proof that humanity is pathetic." That's using the term "microcosm" VERY liberally. The general sentiment of injustice is valid in my view, but to equinanimously compare the liquidation of an ambitious video game company to the genocide of actual human beings is offensive, even if you do throw the word "microcosm" in there.
Glad to have someone agree with me on this -- I feel like some kind of conspiracy theorist when I talk about Sega sometimes!
Anyway, I still invite people with opposing views to put me into place if you think this is too romantic.

Yeah, his diction was entirely too heavy-handed -- I totally agree there.AppleQueso wrote:It's fucking Urban Dictionary. Nothing on that site matters, at all.

I think this guy likes to forget the hilarious failures of the Sega CD, the 32x, and the Saturn in the US. The Sega CD's problem was that add-ons are a tough sell, though they didn't have the years of data to show that yet. Then the 32x came out and completely undermined Sega's credibility, especially when the Saturn was announced shortly thereafter. And then the Saturn in the US was criminally mismanaged. Sega was the victim of trying to be number one instead of being content with number two.

Yeah I sympathize with die-hard Sega fans and its a shame what happened to them, but the gross hyperbole in that definition is just completely embarrassing.

Anyway, how you been? I been keeping the trolls away from Theisozone and moderating the Dreamcast and other stuff there diligently.
