Are there any "easier" shmups?
Anybody able to recommend some good shmups for a newb to get his feet wet? I like the format but I just suck. Not necessarily easy but just a good introduction that won't frustrate those of us who aren't hardcore.
If you don't mind emulating try any number of TurboGrafx 16 shmups. They are all very n00b accessible, especially Soldier Blade and Blazing Lazers. If you are willing to procure CD images Gate of Thunder is an excellent beginner shmup. I recommend using Mednafen or Ootake rather than Magic Engine. ME screws up the sound on some CD games.
Dreamcast: Zero Gunner 2
Saturn: Galactic Attack
Sega CD: Silpheed
Those are my picks at least.

There are to main types of shmups, manic and methodic. getting good at one will not make you good at the other. If you want to get good at the manic shmups the only real way to do it is practice. I play loads of manic shmups yet when playing something like r-type fail completely, party because of the view, partly because it's a different game. In a manic shmup the main aim is just dodging bullets and stuff. I'm good at that but would constantly get killed by the environment/ shrapnel in something like Zero Gunner.

Silpheed is great for people that have tried the genre before but didnt really get into it (like me). Oh even though its more rail style HyperZone on the SNES is really easy and is great for getting into those kindo games.racketboy wrote:Dreamcast: Zero Gunner 2

Oh I forgot about Galaga, Xevious, and Galaga 90' for TG16 is just remarkable.
