Help me prep for a KoF XIII Tournament

Post by Crabmaster2000 »

Signed up for a King of Fighters XIII Tournament on Nov.26th. Its extremely rare that anyone holds events like this locally so I'm pretty stoked.

I've only had a little bit of experience with the KoF series and while I've played a lot of fighters I've never played any of them very competitively. If anyone who is very familiar with the series or with playing fighting games competitively can give me some pointers I'd really appreciate it.

My goal is to place in the top 3.

The game will be played on the Xbox 360 using the standard controller (gross, right?). I really need to practice a fighting game using that controller so should I pick up KoF XII in the mean time? How different are the games from release to release? If I learn a character in XII is there a good chance they will be very similar in XIII? Are there any good fighting game forums I could join for some extra tips?

Thanks in advance for the help!!

I've played both KoFXII and (a little) KoFXIII.

Most of the changes in the games were in the form of new characters and adding a story so if you learn someone from KoFXII, at least most of the skills should transfer over.

Is there a reason you have to use the stock 360 controller? Organizing a tournament to find the best KoFXIII player with stock 360 controllers is like determining the best motorcycle rider in a moped contest.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Thanks for the info. I did a little bit of research just now and decided to get KoF XII since most people seem to think its a stepping stone to XIII. Should get it in the mail so I can start practicing next week sometime.

I completely agree with you on the controller. But its EB Games holding the contest and they dont always make sense. They guy at the counter just told me that "not everybody has an arcade stick, so this way its a level playing field".

Any advice on characters/teams to gravitate towards or stay away from?

Its been long enough since I've played a KoF game that I'll basically be learning my characters from scratch again so I'm wide open in terms of building a comfortable team.

When I played KoFXIII in the arcade, I was a huge fan of Terry, King, and Kyo. It's a pretty solid, all-around team imo.

Speaking as someone who has been to multiple fighting tourneys, if it seems like a community thing, go for it, you'll definitely get in the top half. If it is a serious tourney that got mention online on fighting game websites, toss your fight stick in the garbage, because they will eviscerate you.
Current systems: Atari 2600[x2], NES(top loader), SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Saturn, Dreamcast, Playstation, PS2, PS2 slim, xbox, xbox 360, Turbografx-16, Game Boy Pocket, Game boy SP[x2], Nintendo DS[x2], Nintendo DSi, Nintendo 3DS, Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket Color, Wonderswan Color, Neo Geo MVS.

If you want to have an edge on this game since it hasn't been released yet, you're pretty much going to have to play the arcade or leaked version:

The leaked version will probably be better for getting accustomed to the controls. Get yourself an XBox360 controller for the PC. To get it to work with this unofficial PC release, you may need xpadder or some other program to map your key configuration.

Follow sites like Shoryuken.com for strategy and tactics:

Its just a small community thing. And given my location I seriously doubt any high-end talent will be participating. I think I've got a good chance of placing high.

@JT - Thanks for the link. I couldnt remember that site for the life of me. It should be a great help.

As crappy as it is to play on a standard controller as oppose to an arcade stick, Playing KoF on a controller ain't too much of an issue thanks to it's traditional 4 button scheme as oppose to SF six button layout! In any event, having Played both XII and XIII, I can tell you both titles are very different. Almost every subsystem introduced in XII was scrapped and replaced with more traditional KOF subsystems in XIII. Don't rely on what you've (or plan to) learn with XII for this tourney. It'll be for nothing. Good luck!
