ipod touch 8gb enough for games?

Post by Jrecee »

I'm going to start developing some ios games (for fun and profit!) but I don't actually have an ios device. So I'm planning on getting an ipod touch. They've done away with the 16gb version so I'm stuck with either $200 for an 8gb or $300 for a 32gb. I'm going to be downloading some games for. . . uh, study. I'm not sure what the average game size is in the app store. And I probably won't be using the device for much music (maybe a couple hundred songs?)

Any input?

8GB Touch has plenty of room. I think I have about 50+ apps including games on mine which takes about 2.5GB. The rest is used by music/images/videos.

Depends how many games you want to put on there. Some of my games take up to 500MB of space. Why not look for a used one? I got a 4th gen 32GB with AppleCare for 85 dollars. Took it to apple and complained about a minor issue and got a new one for free. ;)

I thought 16gb would be way too small for me...turns out it's way too big. I don't like to keep a whole bunch of apps on at once, if I'm done with a game I usually delete it. I have like 7-8 and it takes up 2gb or so. If you like to keep all your games on your device at once then you probably will want the 32gb.

iTunes has the file sizes listed in the description section for apps - they're usually not too large.

I went and looked through some of the apps on my moms iphone. The average for a game is under 50mb. I can imagine that 3D or more expensive games might be a lot higher. But I'll be playing smaller scale games since that's what I want to make.

If you delete apps you purchased you can re-download them right? Permitted they're still in the store of course.

Sounds like the 8gb will be enough for me to use for development though.

So any thoughts on what kind of games you want to see? I'm working on a 16-bit style platformer right now, but might release something simpler first.

Yes. If you delete an app on your phone, you can always re-sync it from iTunes. It's just like putting music on your iPod. If you your hard drive fails or you accidentally delete them from iTunes I'm almost positive you can re-download them from Apple.

So you can just store apps on your computer as well?

Yep, if you've ever used iTunes to organize music it works pretty much the same. You keep everything backed up on the pc and transfer it to your iPod. When you buy apps on your iPod over wifi, your iTunes account will automatically download a copy to your pc as backup next time you use it.
