Secret of Mana or Chrono Trigger

Post by RCBH928 »

As the titles says,
I am not into RPG's especially SNES ones but I have always seen them with high scores and I am willing to pick on one and experience it. Those 2 games got scores like 10/10. I want of the experts on the topic to tell me which shall I pick as I dont think I want to go through 2 games.

I will favor the shorter one, I dont like to spend 80hrs on a single game

Chrono trigger on ds. Def a must play. I usually beat it once a year for many reasons. I still don't have every item. The ds version has new items, dungeons and a couple new strongest weapons.

I think som is really good for 2-3 players. Thinking of picking that game up myself. I've owned the secrets guide 3 times. About time I try the game out.

It's nice you're willing to give them a chance, but you already sound like you're out to not enjoy them to some extent. "I am not into RPG's especially SNES ones" ... lol. You should give us a little more detail on what kind of RPG's you have played and maybe enjoyed or what exactly you're looking for, as both games are honestly very different. Chrono Trigger is turned based and Secret of Mana is real time combat, to put it simply...

Both games are probably equally within the 20-30 hours range, 30 is probably pushing it. So yeah they're about the same length.

People say this a lot, but I think it'd be kind of tedious for me, lol. I think I'd be a control freak in this kind of game. But anyways I've personally only played SoM solo, and I've played the game probably 5 times at least or something. Maybe a tad bit more than Chrono Trigger, I do personally like it more myself but most will probably favor Chrono Trigger.

Final Fantasy VI

But honestly, I'd go with Chrono Trigger. I find it to be extremely fun. FFVI is a more "pure" RPG, though (as in it has all the traditional aspects, where CT has changed a few things to break away from tradition).

Heh, good answer! I would also go for Chrono Trigger, if those are the only two choices. I like Secret of Mana, but its nowhere near a 10 in my eyes. Then again, Soul Blazer is one of my favorites, so what do I know?

Chronotrigger. SoM is a good romp, but not as deep as Chronotrigger. In SoM there's only one set of characters for you to control, and there's only one ending. Combat pretty much comes down to pushing the strike button repeatedly. In Chronotrigger you can choose from a bunch of different characters, each with different strengths. The party you choose affects the dialog in the cutscenes, and it affects the outcome of the game. All in all it makes for a much more interesting game.

You can't constantly attack in SoM or you won't do any damage. Timing does come into play.

still, nowhere near CT.

Yeah Chrono Trigger fo sho.

I couldn't get into SoM. The menu system was too confusing for me.

Chrono Trigger is different from the traditional turn based combat. Square calls it ATB (Active Time Battle). You have to wait until one of your party members is able to strike and then you command it. It's not quite like Zelda's real time combat but it's better than Golden Sun turned based combat.
