ZeroAX wrote:The nostalgia critic. AVGN isn't that funny imo. I believe that he is a much better serious reviewer than a comedy reviewer. Every time he talks about a console's history, it's very educational and fun to watch. But few of his videos are like that. Most of them are about shouting how crappy the said game is. I know that's his "thing", but it has gotten a bit old, so I wish he'd just start doing normal retro reviews.

Also his movie reviews are really enjoyable, even though we have soooooo different taste, and I end up disagreeing with his opinions most of the time

Nostalgia Critic rocks on the other hand. I  a lot with his videos, though his success rate at making good jokes varies on the source material, and the strange thing is that he makes better jokes against average to crappy movies (Godzilla, Hook ect.) than he does the absolutely shitty ones (they are already soooo bad, there isn't much he can do to make them seams worse)
I could not agree more about everything you just said.

I only stumbled upon Nostalgia Critic because of the AVGN but I ended up liking him a lot more. I would love to see the Nostalgia Critic review games more often, but movies are his thing so I can't really see that happening.

The whole swear a lot angle of the nerd really gets old fast, and I find it is pretty immature/lazy humor. Not that I am the most mature person but like its been previous mentioned, I also strongly prefer his honest reviews a lot more than his fart humor crap.

I find his other characters take more away from the experience than they actually add. The Glitch Gremlin was a neat concept but in the end I always find myself bored by these parts and waiting for him to get back to the actual review. Shit Pickle was just fucking retarded and I don't think I laughed once at it. It seems like rather than adding actual valid input and dialogue into the episode, it is just time fillers of arguing back and forth while throwing in a lot of swearing.

I was also horribly disappointed with the Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle episode. It was hyped up so much and he was so proud of it for some reason. What it boils down to is three minutes of a mediocre review with ten minutes of cheesy fight scenes.

Not only are the AVGN videos coming out half as often, they aren't nearly as funny as they used to be. They feel rushed and you can tell his heart isn't in it anymore. It seems like they are just made simply to tie people over for the time being.

I get my video review fix usually from The Vault at Screw Attack and I also really like The Classic Game Room.

I watch a lot of video reviews.

James Rolfe is brilliant. He's down to Earth, smart, and relatable.

I love how his collection looks REAL: you can tell he's owned a lot of that shit since he was a kid; he has the same Nintendo Power stickers on his GameBoy and NES controllers that I've had since I was 10. His gaming environment feels natural and organic to me. I don't like watching videos of 30-something dudes showing off their pristine $200 Saturn games from ebay, it just feels so sterile and uninspired.

I love all of James' AVGN shit, as well as his Cinemassacre videos. I've been loading up Monster Madness every morning as soon as I wake up. I must say though: the best AVGN episodes are the simplistic ones, things start to go downhill when he starts cramming in guest characters and special effects. The last episode, Dark Castle, was one of my favorites: just James ranting in front of a camera.

There's a few other reviewers on YouTube I enjoy:
- rinrygamegame: Canadian girl who's into tons of good retro stuff. Great editing and recording skills. The fact that she's amazingly hot and has a cute voice helps too.
- HappyConsoleGamer: Canadian dude who's into tons of shit I like: imports, Phantasy Star, TurboGrafx-16, obscure RPGs, Neo Geo, etc. Fun to watch.
- JumbleJunkie: Personal friend of mine from my childhood. Owns a good amount of arcade machines and loves all things Sega.

I find that a lot of video (YouTube, etc) reviewers (even many of the well-known ones) annoy me to no end. They're too loud, obscene, talk like hyperactive children, tend to over-enunciate everything, and/or act in such a stereotypically "nerdy" manner that I feel second-hand embarrassment when I watch their videos.

As for the Irate Gamer, I've seen all his videos. He sucks. He plagiarizes James Rolfe, disables comments and ratings from his videos, flags videos that are critical of him, makes tons of errors, and simply acts like a straight up asshole.

I typically use a combination of Gamespot and Gamefaqs. Gamespot for the professional reviews, Gamefaqs for the user reviews. These are the two review sites that load quickest for me, so I tend to stick with these. IGN, Gamesradar, and the rest take too long to load up. And they both have the advantage of having some of the biggest backlogs of reviews on the internet. Few review sites have been around as long as Gamespot, so they are good for 5th gen games. I don't do video reviews; they don't tend to as informative and they are harder to study.

For videos, I like Zero Punctuation (Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw). When he's not just being overbearingly critical, I find his insights into game design to be astute. When he's not overly scatalogical, I find his rapidfire comic delivery to be funny.

But mostly I read. I read from people that just wax philosophical about games in general, and only do reviews as part of their larger writings on game design and gamer culture. For that, I follow blogs like Leigh Alexander's Sexyvideogameland, Jorge Albor and Scott Juster's Experience Points, and the Frictional Games developer (Amnesia, Penumbra) over at their developer blog In the Games of Madness. I also enjoy reading things by Kieron Gillen and Ian Bogost, when I come across them.

Does anyone like Spoony? I just watched his 5 hour lets play of Phantasmagoria 2. Not all in one sitting obviously. Awful game, fantastic send up. I nearly busted a gut during the last hour, well worth watching the whole thing.

I cannot stand Zero Punctuation. Punctuation exists for a reason.

AVGN was great during 2006-07, then his reviews became unwatchable. His timing and inflections have become worse than ever, and he is no longer genuine. I do wish him the best and hope that one day he will direct an indy horror film that gives him some recognition. Current Grade: D

Nostalgia Critic remains great, but it could be a "nostalgia" thing where I can relate to him. His humor by far exceeds avgn. Current Grade: B+

Irate Gamer has been, and so far has always been shit. He's a word for word rip off of avgn, and has no real insight to a game. He's not original, nor funny. F-

I can't stand most video reviews. Gametrailers.com reviews are OK and have lots of "direct feed" video. The captured gameplay helps more than the voiceover, though their voiceover reviews are OK. For video game "shtick", I don't like most of what I've seen, with a rare exception being Talking Classics.

Written reviews, I actually have found many great old writeups on Gamefaqs, from before emulation was at its level of exposure now, from before platform holders were rereleasing classics on current systems. Those text file writeups about 8 and 16-bit titles have a new relevance now and while some are barely passing middle-school English, others are insightful and very witty.

I also think they are comics, not actual critics.

I think Rolfe has a lot of talent. He is actually very aware of the staleness or how limited Toilet Humour is or how succesful his acting is and that will take him far. He knows his pitfalls but also how he might solve them and many of his episodes must be big experiments for him, to see what he can do and what he can't.

If he ever makes something bigger I will be first in line.

The Critic is better but he suffers from stale delivery and timing. Many of his gags use the same structure and that will hurt him a lot in the end. He has potential but may very well become stuck.

I normally do not read many reviews, I normally resort to racketboy to see if something is good. A video review is also pretty long, in the time it takes to watch one I could have read several written reviews and getting a better understanding of the game.
