I disagree. Sometimes some stories seem cliche now but were original back then. One of the charges leveled against RPGs now is that they use the same tired cliches in the story that were moving 10-20 years prior.xan_racketBOY_fan wrote:Whether you played x game when it was first released or just recently, the story or characters don't age the way graphics do - they're timeless. Be it video games, film, literature or a great book, you're bound to invest some emotional attachment to a story's characters or situations - "block head" or not.korn16ftl3 wrote: i find it that when X game was played in its era (FF7 for example) it is best played in it era if you played FF7 and seen the aris scene youd be like wow what a bunch of block heads or something along those lines (face it that game aged terribly), BUT if you played the game within its era i feel you would have a different respect for said game and said scene

Oh I agree, should have mentioned *some* stories are timeless. But in the case here, because the characters are block heads, in 2011, Aerith's death is a "meh" moment. I'm fairly sure had this been played out a PS3, he would feel differently.

stories to certin games are always timeless but not the GFX (like you and i are saying)xan_racketBOY_fan wrote:Oh I agree, should have mentioned *some* stories are timeless. if some 14yr old playeed FF7 for the 1st time ever and even not hearing spoilers and such on this current day he would say "wtf was the big deal about this game"
in this day and age we get the same tired old crap games recycled over and over and over as well as ripping parts and systems off from other games they have gone to commercial and have spoiled the consumers of today's industry with pretty GFX and instant gratification VS the older games where we had to work to get some where to feel accomplished
but hay today's games is another rant of mine that dont belong in this thread at least

I don't know. I've seen so many unexpected deaths in JRPGs now that I kinda expect at least 1 per game.xan_racketBOY_fan wrote:Oh I agree, should have mentioned *some* stories are timeless. I blame FFII(IV) for all expectations of death I have when I play JRPGs.BoringSupreez wrote:I don't know. I played Final Fantasy VII when it was new, without spoilers. It was a big shock to see Aerith die and I was sad. Sad that she wouldn't be in my party anymore because she was my favorite character. I didn't really care much about the story. Hell, I didn't even understand the story at all! I played the game about 3 or 4 times in English, and had no fucking idea what the story was.
Then again, I don't care at all about story in video games. I play RPGs to improve my characters.

I didn't really care about Aerith's death because she was never in my party. I get what your saying about playing to improve your characters because I was like that when I was younger. Now I need something more to keep my interest because I can't commit as much time to games.Inazuma wrote:I played Final Fantasy VII when it was new, without spoilers. I loved how FFVII had that part where shortly after Midgar, you stop in the hotel and the whole game comes to a crawl while you have to go through a shitload of exposition. I was like wtf, I want to fight things. Although stepping into the past and fighting with Sephiroth by your side was neat.

FFVII's story is among the shittiest and most convoluted I've ever seen in a video game. And don't tell me something got lost in translation, the Japanese version doesn't make much sense either.
One of my biggest pet peeves is when fantasy and science fiction writers rely so much on "magic" (or "mana" or "life force") as a plot device. It's lazy as hell.

Yes, that's very lazy. I hate when a character is on the verge of death and the suddenly woosh! Magic save! This sort of stuff is probably why Batman has more appeal these days than "magical" superheroes like Superman.BoneSnapDeez wrote:One of my biggest pet peeves is when fantasy and science fiction writers rely so much on "magic" (or "mana" or "life force") as a plot device. Although VII had some pretty bad writing in the main.story, I still enjoed the little twists and character development. Though, most of the characters didn't progress at all, a couple of them were interesting.
Sadly, its hype has caused anti-hype, and now its usually love it or hate it.
I don't think it has nearly the worst story in any game I've played. But, I've played a lot of games (Like Quest 64)
