I thought it was very good. It was different than the original, keeping the concept but doing several things differently. I commend that because if I'm going to see a remake I don't want to see what I already saw. I want to see what else can be done with the original concept.

I half-agree. This is why I think mostly remakes are useless. They should be different. SO they should just be a sequel. or prequel. Or side-story or whatever. But why a remake? At any rate, I thought the NOES remake was horrid. I genuinely felt like I just couldn't wait for it to end. Just terrible. And before you assume I'm just being a snobby purist, I very much enjoyed the remakes of Black X-Mas, Halloween, My Bloody Valentine and Friday The 13th just to name a few.

^I don't think you're being a snobby purist. Everyone has different taste. I thought the direction in the remake created a different Freddy Krueger. A more menacing one. I also went into it hoping for a different Freddy than I knew and wanting to experience a different tone than the original, and that's what I felt like I got out of it, so it met my expectations.

I do agree with remakes not being necessary, but unfortunately it seems like a lot of ideas these days can't get financed. People don't want to spend money unless they've already seen the franchise succeed and know they can cash in on that fan base.

EDIT: It just dawned on me that sequels/prequels can also cash in on that fan base. Doh.

They are to me as well. I like seeing remakes every now and then really just to see the differences, but I always go in with low expectations and come out at least mildly enjoying the movies. I do think the Bloody Valentine and Friday the 13th ones were better than the NOES one because they were more fun/added more to the story. Didn't know about the Black XMAS one.

F13 felt very much like a sequel disguised as remake. The opening told the back-story (just like almost every other installment of the series) and then we were introduced to a new gen of teenagers for Jason to fuckup. In fact, when those kids go looking for that dude's sister and knock on that lady's door she says something about the murders at Camp Blood going on "all those years ago" -- it seemed almost a nod to longtime fans to denote that this was indeed just another installment. Maybe I chose to see it that way, but...

MBV was just fun. Lussier and Farmer have a pretty good handle on shit. They did Jason X too, which was again -- just fun. Todd Farmer's got a pretty good resume honestly.

Now THIS might shock you: I'm one of the FEW people out there who likes Black X-Mas (the remake) MORE than Black Christmas (the original).

Oh, I totally agree on F13, I couldn't believe how many people told me it was bad. With NOES, I can totally understand people disliking it, but I thought the F13 was fantastic in the sense that it felt like both a continuation and a tribute. I also thought Jason X (which I like to call Jason Takes the Galaxy) was tons of fun. Speaking of MBV, I watched it in 3D but only had special Christmas 3D glasses because the DVD was missing them, so I watched it in 3D with little angels added to the screen.
