I know I watched the third Creepshow, but I can't even remember a single thing about it. Haha.

You guys ever check out James Rolfe's Monster Madness series? For 2011 he's doing Sequel-A-Thon.

Exorcist III: Legion

Wow, this was amazing, after watching The Exorcist II I expected dissapointment. Not at all, it's an incredibly scary, chilling horror film that everyone that's slightly interested on supernatural horror should watch.

You have to watch it, I'd dare to say it's even better than the original.

It's not that I mind having to root for someone, that's fine. It's that they turned Jason into a shadow of his former self. Sure he's more sympathetic, but the guys' killed 154 people to Freddy's 39 (and that's including the 8 kids mentioned before the 1st film). Jason is obviously much more prolific, even if he is more sympathetic.

I think they could have written it without dumbing him down is all. I mean, they made sure the teens knew that all they had to do was get Jason back to Crystal Lake to stop the real-life killings and they knew they could pull Freddy out of their dreams. I just feel that they could have achieved the same things without taking away some of Jason's bite. That's all. :)

Hocus Pocus

My wife loves this movie, but I had never seen it. I remember my younger siblings watching it all the time, but I missed out on it I guess. Anyway, despite how obnoxious I find Middler, I did find this movie surprisingly entertaining. I don't have a lot to say about it. Just that it was fun, and I'd totally watch it again.

Now that I've finished my Nightmare marathon, I'm moving on to Scream 1-3.

Image

Scream's legacy now is undeniable. It has succeeded so well because it provided a commentary on the horror/slasher genre, while at the same time still managing to be not only suspenseful but also scary.

Wes Craven should be given credit for making something that was once so mundane and commonplace on Halloween night....

Image

...into something truly frightening. The entire opening scene has become an icon of slasher imagery, in a decade when the slasher was considered all but dead (or in the very least in a really bad slump).

Image
"That's not ET!"

That first scene is handled so perfectly that it almost makes the rest of the movie pale by comparison. The scene is so well done that the first time you see it you're so pumped with adrenaline that you remember why you watch horror in the first place. (When I first saw it, my friend couldn't make it past the first scene and made me TURN OFF THE MOVIE because she couldn't handle watching it while the sun was down  .) And after the disappointing slump of horror/slashers in the early 90's you can see why the movie was so well received. Slashers were scary again and it was a beautiful feeling.

Image
Beautiful for us. Not so much for Drew.

Building on ideas first conceived in Wes Craven's New Nightmare, it is filled with self-awareness and buckets full of ironic, snarky humor.

Image
Also, gotta love the Nightmare references. "Well, the first one was good, but the rest stunk." Trying to tell us something, Wes?

Horror hasn't really been the same since. Since the first installment we've been given similar second rate slashers with mirrored casts spouting 'knowing' dialogue. What was once a breath of fresh air quickly became stale.

Image
And parodied to freaking death!

Scream proves that it's not the originality of the concept, but the skill of execution that matters. This film works because the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) winks and nods at the audience are given through the characters dialogue, not the characters themselves.

Image
"This is the moment when the supposedly dead killer comes back to life, for one last scare." "Not in my movie."

So for my favorite self-aware slasher: 5/5

yup. Scream is definitely 5/5 for me. It's actually one of my all-time favorite movies period. It's just plain brilliant. Love the hell out of it.

One thing the series has done so well is this: Ghostface is the killer. But who is he? In every single movie he's somebody different. I think that's what makes him scary. That scene in the beginning of 2 where they're at the movies and everyone's dressed like Ghostface? Scary! Because he personifies the anybody-could-be-evil idea. Honestly, I love that Ghostface has become a new classic costume each Halloween. But at the same time, it's slightly unnerving. Isn't it?
