Cheap character? How about LINK, my god he was so annoying in the Gamecube version of 2.

Soul Calibur is rather hit or miss for me. I think the first game is okay, but I didn't care to finish it. Soul Calibur 2 I really got into and did everything there was to do in that one, played it often with friends, etc. Liked a lot of the characters and got pretty good at it.

From there, I've tried the others out and I just can't get into them, I'm not sure why. The character customization in the newer games is damn good, but yeah. That's all I really cared for.

Tekken 3 is still the non-sprite fighter King for me. One of my old friends of mine and I had legendary Law (me) vs Paul battles, heh. I loved the old Tekken's since they were pretty combo focused, but other series like DOA which seem to rely on countering and grabs... eh, can't stand them. I'm not really sure where Soul Calibur stands, you can luck out with button mashing or know what you're doing in many cases.

Link was cheap? The novelty value was kind of cool, for a bit at least, but generally I avoided using Link like a plague. I couldn't stand playing as him, as I found him crap.

…because it is.

I remember hearing all the hype for this game. Shortly after it came out, my friend and I sit down to play it against each other. It's a mash-fest. Soul Blade felt like Tekken with weapons, Tekken being a great skill-based fighter. Soul Caliber doesn't even come close to feeling like there is skill involved. I believe my friend and I had to institute a ban on that guy with the blade hands because he could win pretty much at will by just hitting the same button over and over.

I know this post sounds like pure newbie-ism, and maybe it is. But after spending so much time playing various skill-based fighting games, Soul Caliber just felt cheap.

He was very easy to abuse playing against other people. He had this really annoying lower sweeping swing attack from what I remember, it was so easy to knock people off stage with him. I didn't like using him or fighting against him at all usually. Spawn seemed a lot cooler and more balanced with everyone else.

Link also had his bow and arrow which the computer would spam you with if you were too far away. Really annoying.

It was easily dodged with a simple sidestep :S. Link is considered one of the worst characters in SC2 iirc.

I remember Spawn being pretty cheap too. I never played as Heihachi so I don't know about him.

Personally, I think Soul Calibur and Mortal Kombat are on opposite sides of the fighting game spectrum. While Mortal Kombat was on the far end of the difficulty curve, where timing and button sequence memorization made it difficult for me to enjoy, Soul Calibur is on the other end, where the fact that you can win without doing any special move made the actual game hard for me to enjoy (basically, I wanted to do special moves but I don't really get which one is considered a special move or just a normal attack that just so happens to have a flash of light involved, also the button mashing aspects make special moves unnecessary or even more trouble than it was worth). That's not to say that I didn't play the frig out of it, I like unlocking things and I wanted a chance to play Seigfried and his big ass sword, so I played through the whole game and unlocked everyone.

As for the middle, I guess I consider the KOF and SF/MSH series to be the ones - they have special moves that require a little bit of practice, but not that hard to do and their memorization will not detract from the game itself (D,F,D,F two Punch buttons as opposed to K,K,FK,P,Energy just to pull out a super from Budokai 1), so you can pull them out at will and make the fight look good.

I've always enjoyed these games, and precisely because there are characters with lots of stances and complexities that make learning interesting. I hate button-mashing and will not do it. I need to know what my characters are capable of doing and have control of that.

If you approach the game without keeping button-mashing as an option, you'll have a better time of it.
