Introduction
We respect the right of our donors to know how their money is being spent to further the Alzheimer's Association mission. We are proud to report that the Association earns high marks from those agencies whose job it is to monitor the activities of nonprofit organizations.
Allocation of expenses
The Alzheimer's Association national organization meets or exceeds relevant watchdog standards in its allocation of donor dollars. According to the BBB Wise Giving Alliance, nonprofit organizations should spend at least 65 percent of its total expenses on program activities, with remaining funds going to administrative and fundraising expenses.
The national Alzheimer's Association organization continues to meet and exceed these minimum standards with 70 percent of our total annual expenses going to care, support, research, awareness and advocacy activities.

One nice option is that we can send our donation as a group, which will also be great pr material for Nick and all of the Racketeers. Dave, if you need any extra info, I'm glad to assist.

Re: 2011 Charity Auction Planning Thread - Suggest a Charity!
I'm going to throw in for Alzheimers aswell, although I would prefer a charity which focuses on helping those who ahve to care for family members suffering from it. A friend of our family had to look after her husband when he got alzheimers. She only got an hour off a week when a carer would visit, which was only just enough time for her to go shopping for the upcoming week, and was the only time she could normally get out of the house. The worst part is that often he couldn't remember who she was when she came back from shopping some of the time despite them having been married for decades. Several times he locked her out of the house or phoned the police thinking she'd broken in to steal his WW2 collection.
A friend of mine made a short film about alzheimers at university too. Maybe I'll post it if I can find it.

I would like to donate to something that helps benefit children. I'll do some research and find a specific charity. I do live in metro Detroit and I'm sure that there are children around here that need help in various ways.

Partners In Health (PIH) is a Boston, Massachusetts-based non-profit health care organization dedicated to providing a "preferential option for the poor". It was founded in 1987 by Dr. Paul Farmer, Ophelia Dahl, Thomas J. White, Todd McCormack, and Dr. Jim Yong Kim.
PIH strives to provide an alternative to the conventional curative method of treatment for the sick and instead tries to prevent diseases before they occur. This model believes that primary health care is essential because health is a right and therefore, it should be available to everyone. PIH strives to bring good medical care to the poor by establishing long-term partnerships with local sister organizations.
The organization's model is described as being one in which: clinical and community barriers to care are removed as diagnosis and treatment are declared a public good and made available free of charge to patients living in poverty. For people living in poverty stricken areas, the treatment of AIDS and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) has been made possible by this model of care.

I'm happy to see Food Bank of the Rockies made it on to the list.
I voted for them and the Tomorrow Fund.

I feel like our donation would make a much more important and immediate impact with the food bank, so they got my vote too.
Re: 2011 Charity Auction Planning Thread - Vote for a Charity!
Just wanted to take a brief second and thank Dsheinem, again, for holding this charity auction. For three years he's taken time out of his schedule with the sole purpose to help others. I think by 2012 we will be able to say that the Racketboy site has raised over $10,000 for charity. That's a lot of cabbage.
That said, please take a few minutes to really research what charity you wish to support. All of the ones on the poll are great, but we're not just donating a few bucks here. Whatever charity we choose to donate to, it makes me proud to be "e-friends" with all you you who participate.
