So I've begun trying out Fitocracy.com. Only on day one but I really like the idea so far.
If you haven't heard of it, Fitocracy is supposed to be the gamers approach to working out. It's all about stats, levels, quests, and achievements.
The idea is that as you build a work out profile, you begin to choose challenges for yourself (quests) that you work towards. As you log your work outs, the website rewards you with points and levels to keep you encouraged until you achieve your quest. Do enough stuff and you unlock achievements.
It's a really campy idea but the group dynamic of it makes it seem worthwhile to me - a little competition is just what it takes to get my butt moving sometimes. The site even supports groups sort of like Steam.
Anyone else trying it out? Thoughts?

Re: Fitocracy
Looks interesting. I could really stand to lose some weight since quitting smoking and getting further into my twenties. It could be just the motivation I need to start getting more physical activity. I have to wait for my back to heal since it went something went wrong recently and I can't stand up straight without intense pain (going to the doctor's friday), but after that's all sorted out I think I'll try it and see if it's the right motivation. Hell, maybe there's some good back-strengthening info on there.
Anyways, I do think the idea of treating it as a game, and including achievements of some sort could really help just because frequent reward triggers usually keep me involved in games.

Haven't gone to the site yet - is there a vision you have to set it up as a competition?
Most importantly, i'd like to do something like this - but so many things fizzle out if the time commitment is too great, what type of time commitment are we looking at?

I think it's only as competitive as you want it to be. The group feature seems to be more for tracking your friends and giving props for progress.mjmjr25 wrote:Haven't gone to the site yet - is there a vision you have to set it up as a competition?

If you want, I have 9 invites left.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
Re: Fitocracy
Pretty cool. I just requested an invite.
I usually work out anyway, so this might be a chance to try something different sometimes.
And it might be an incentive to get back to my exercises, since I'm almost recovered from a surgery (two months!).

Thanks, Flake!
Re: Fitocracy
This sounds really interesting. I'm not "fat" per se, but I could stand to lose some weight. I'll check it out when I actually have the time. Like tomorrow.
I feel old when talking to anyone my age yet too inexperienced to effectively talk to anyone older. Life is grand that way.
