I don't know too much about the rpgs, but there are almost too many good shooters for the saturn.

If you aren't importing, than there are only 2, Galactic Attack and Darius Gaiden. Both are pretty damn nice, and can be had for fairly cheap.

If you pick up an action replay, which allows for easy importing, then that opens a door to all kinds of fantastic shooters.

Some cheap(ish) import shooters that are worth their asking price. I got each of these for around $25 within the last year.

Soukyugurentai (one of the best on the system, easily the best for its price)
Gunbird (Supports TATE, unlike Mobile Light Force. Really fun Psikyo game)
Donpachi (Much cheaper than the ps1 port, but not quite as good. Still a great game)

... and some of the more expensive shooters.

Battle Garegga (My favorite shooter on the Saturn, and possibly my favorite of all time. A must-have in any saturn collection imo. Also, a Saturn exclusive)
Dodonpachi (the best home port of this iconic shooter by Cave. Probably the cheapest of this bunch, and its great!)
Batsugun (Toaplan's last game, and often cited as the first bullet-hell shooter. A Saturn exclusive, this is also a must-have shooter on the system)
Radiant Silvergun (One of the most well-known shooters, mostly due to its high price. I'd say go with the XBLA version of this, as its not everyones cup of tea, and the XBLA port is pretty good)

Hope this helps out some in the shooter department. I really love shooters

There a veriety of saturn games that don't have to bankrupt you. I have about 15 saturn games, and out of those, only NiGHTs and Guardian Heroes cost me more than £10. Sega Rally Championship, Christmas NiGHTS, Virtual On, Virtua Fighter, Athlete Kings (Decathlon), worms, theme park and rayman all cost me under £5, and panzer dragoon 1 & 2 and discworld not too much either.

Plus there's still some other stuff of note for me to acquire which wont break the bank - baku baku, wipeout, clockwork knight, bug, pandemonium and sonic R should all cost under £10.

Sure a lot of the saturn classics are damn pricy, but it doesnt mean you cant pick up a few solid games for a reasonable price.

Clockwork Knight 1 and 2
Three Dirty Dwarves
Die Hard Arcade
Resident Evil
Shinobi Legions
Panzer Dragoon 1 and 2 (Never played saga)
Saturn Bomberman (Has a fun campaign that can be played co op)

Shining Wisdom is very boring IMO. I tried so many times to get into this game being its one of my favorite genres.

Albert Odyssey is fantastic IMO. Last part pissed me off but still a fun game.

I liked Dark Savior. It's pretty fun. Shining Wisdom only if it is fairly cheap.

DEFINITELY get into imports on the Saturn. You can get a LOT of the games very cheaply that way. The Racketboy store sells Pro Action Replay carts that allow you to play imports on them.

Installing a mod chip will not allow you to play imports (unlike a modded PS1). You have to actually region mod the system.

Yes, Dragon Force is amazing. Did you know there Dragon Force II also came out on it? Japan only, though.

I don't know how anyone can afford Saturn games. I've had a Saturn for about a year and have 2 games lol.

 Two eye rolling remarks on one page. Yay!

Stuff like VF, VF2, Street Fighter Alpha (Zero) 1 and 2, NiGHTS, Sega Rally, Daytona USA, most SNK fighting games, Astal, Darkstalker's Revenge, Darkstalker's 3, etc., Sonic Wings, Donpachi, Gunbird, and many other games can all be found in the $5-20 range imported from Japan. Get yourself a PAR cart and save tons of money! Even the RPGs are super cheap if you don't mind them in Japanese. Even Guardian Heroes is often $30 or less.

As for the idea of a price drop on the US or PAL version of Guardian Heroes, I think that is probably a pipe dream. Yes, some games do drop in price once they are re-released digitally, however... they is less likely to happen on imports on a lesser known system like the Saturn. I guess Dracula: Rondo of Blood on the PCE did drop from WELL over $100 to now $75 or so recently, but I think that is the exception.

kylrbeez wrote:i think guardian heroes will drop in price considering its going to get a console release. im watching the prices for guardian heroes aswell and when i drops to 30ish, im nabbin one hopefully. ebay is a tricky thing, you have to eye those prices daily on there and i hate doing that, but considering the price drops for ff7, parappa the rappa, vandal hearts 2 and others, GH will soon follow. wish us both luck, lol

your not alone.. you can get some good deals but its SOOOO damn time consuming. Its not made any easier by the crappy changes theyve been making either. I lost several items i wanted with some new phone number implimentation theyre adding. It added like 3 or 4 seconds to my bid time to cycle through extra screens which made me loose on a copy of dragon force and some other stuff

@Reprise thanks for the link to the Dark savior review i'll give it a look

its an early oval button one. I got it from a past collector that had it in storage for the past 12 years or so. I actualy havent looked into the modding scene.. so if i get one of the round button ones i can mod it to play Import or backup games? I really want panzer dragoon saga, but it seems like it goes for roughly 200 bucks on average right now! Is that price right? Thats what i noticed looking at some completed ebay auctions.

I see some great suggestions. I need to get Three Dirty Dwarves just on the name alone, lol

some mentioned that caught my eye:
Burning rangers (really? this looked kinda dumb.. is it fun?)
Earthworm Jim 2. Is this worth it if i have the genesis version?
Shinobi Legions .. this seems to be a polarizing game. Some people say its awesome some people say it sucks. Whats so different about it?
Clockwork Knight .. i heard the first game was kinda meh, but the 2nd is decent. What is it an action platformer? thats what it appears to be

for those i asked about:
Magic knight rayearth does seem kinda pricey.. is that normal? Wondering if its worth shelling out for that kinda cash. Only one person said its a decent action RPG. I never did like the anime
Shining Wisdom got 2 people poo pooing it.. is this one just not worth the asking price? I kinda wanted all the shining games, but if its that bad maybe its worth taking a pass. It looks like it goes from high 20's to mid 50's. With the average price being around the high 30's.. is it worth that? or not
Shining the Holy Ark I already bought it but I'm wondering if its any good.. since Shining Wisdom is being slammed did i screw up with Holy Ark?

at least it sounds like Albert Odyssey was a good purchase

At all the shooter sugestions.. im not that big a shooter fan. They're ok, but not the kinda thing id shell out a lot of cash for like i would for an RPG or good beat em up.

Then again, I could be completelg wrong. Has the price of Radiant Silvergun been dropping much if at all?

havent been watching that, but the price of Suikoden I dropped considerably after it was on PSN for aw hile. Same with FFVII i belive

Hmm somehow didn't see Breetai's post.

I might want to get into the import scene. At least for some beat em ups and stuff. DEFINITELY for Darkstalkers Are you saying there were a few Darkstalkers games released in Japan that didn't make it here? I think Darkstalkers revenge was the only one that came out in the US. I'm not sure how the saturn controller works for fighting games though

Im confused though: I dont have to mod anything for importing? I can just buy the pro action replay cart listed here and that will somehow let me play import games? What about backup/burnt games? Id like to actually try to just burn some of the way more expensive ones and see if theyre worth owning before i shell out 60-90 bucks for them. Its nice that i can do that with my old Dreamcast without any kinda modding

No actually i wasn't aware of that. I remember i borrowed my buddies old saturn back in the day just to play the original Dragon force. Dont you need a ram backup cart to play it? I seem to recall i had to use my friends to do that. I definitely want to pick one up, its just damn pricy, averaging around 80 bucks it seems for a good copy. I doubt thats the kinda game i could play in Japanese though. RPGs just dont fly for that

You didn't make a mistake with Shining the Holy Ark. I don't own it myself, and haven't played it much, but it's supposed to be very good. It's a "dungeon crawler" like Shining the Darkness I believe.

As for imports, yes you can just use the Action Replay 4 Plus cartridge in order to play imports. I'm not sure what the exact compatibility is, but it must be about 99% of games that work. There's only a few games I know of that may have issues.

I haven't modded my saturn to play backups/burns, but what I used to do in order to try games before buying them, is to use the SSF Saturn emulator on my computer and downloading roms. Then if I enjoyed the game, I could decide whether it's worth shelling out for.

The third Darkstalkers game was released for the Saturn in Japan. It is amazing, to be honest. It uses the 4MB RAM expansion and really does blow away anything the PS1 could do in 2D. It is essentially arcade perfect.

The Saturn controller is incredible for fighting games. Think of the first official 6-button pad on the Genesis, and then somehow make it better. That is the Saturn pad (model 2).

Im confused though: I dont have to mod anything for importing? I can just buy the pro action replay cart listed here and that will somehow let me play import games?

Yes.

You basically need a mod chip. There is a swap method, but that is hard as hell.

The Saturn has enough internal memory for every game (meaning, unlike the Sega CD, there are no games that REQUIRE it to play the entire game). It is a good idea to buy a memory cart. Just get a Pro Action Replay. It does everything.

Panzar Dragoon Saga, I believe, is one of them. You can't play past the first disc.

If you can throw around the cash, I'd try and grab a Saturn copy. Mainly because the updated art style pales in comparison to the original. At least I think so.

Echo, echo, echo.

Hundreds of games have been released via psn / wii / xbawks download. It isn't affect original release prices. Even official / physical compilation discs don't affect original releases.

There are hundreds of examples, but the one that I think best drives the point home is the Ultimate Shooting Collection (wii), prior to its release the DC Versions of Radirgy / Karous / Chaos Field - combined would run you about $175-200. Now, they run you about $210-230. Meanwhile the USC (wii) can be bought used for under $10 (new for $14.44 shipped on amazon).

In many cases, a download release DRIVES UP the price of the original. Folks pay $10 for the download, fall in love w/the game, and want an original. Thus, they've created an even deeper market for the game.
