MrPopo wrote:Yeah, that segment was really creepifying, and much more effective than any other game I've played. So now you're going to get your first really good gun, on your way to the scientists. It's a noticable step up from the AK and the MP5 you've been using until now.
If you're thinking of the TR 301 AR, I've had that for a long time actually. lol, when I first got to the bar I actually went to the left in the huge industrial zone and took down a lot of powerful guys there, saved that scientist, etc. Did a lot of that before I went to the labs, and I even had to back track to find Stervok(???)'s stash underground before that military base that had the documents. Totally went a little out of order there but it worked out! I did just find a brand new TR that has a scope though, so that's awesome.

I try to keep around an AK at times for easier enemies like the bandits (though I'm seeing veteran ones pop up now with the coats) and that automatic shotgun comes in handy in those underground area's. Hope to get that armor that boosts my weight limit a bit sometime soon though. I'm not sure what I have right now, but it's a step up from the Stalker suit, was 36,000 at the bar.

Even with good equipment that military base South of the first camp you start off in the game that I just cleared out was still pretty tough, there had to have been like 20 guys or something.

Ahh yeah, you totally went out of your way. The suit I was talking about isn't until very late game. It's not the easiest thing to find, and it doesn't let you sprint. You'll actually get a really good suit from the scientists if you do one of their side missions, and it can take you to the end game.

Oh... screw that then! lol, I couldn't live without sprint. But yeah that one scientist I did save at the train yard said whenever I go to their labs or something I'll get a suit for free. Guess I'm pretty close to the end or something? I admittedly kind of stopped doing some of the random side missions since they were kind of whatever and repetitive for now.

What are your thoughts on the sequels? They seem kind of polarizing to some people, but I think I might dig them a good bit. I hear both of them or one of them is a lot more linear, but I don't think that'll bother me much.

The suit you get from the scientists just for rescuing the one guy isn't the one I'm talking about. The one I'm talking about you get from a side mission that you can complete at the same time you do the main mission. So when you get to their bunker accept all their jobs, since they're all easy to do and have good rewards (aside from the "get artifact X" job).

Clear Sky ends up being similar to SoC, but not as much involving the underground areas. There's a faction wars segment that isn't done well and you can pretty much ignore it. It feels like an expansion pack. The one notable thing it does add is the weapon upgrade system. You can take your base rifle and decide to upgrade one parameter or another, and then a second branch off of that, so you can fit the gun to your playstyle. They use the same system in Call of Pripyat. CoP is all new areas (Pripyat is in both SoC and CoP, but CoP redoes the map) and is less linear. Instead of SoC and CS's "go to point A, go to point B, back to A, now to C" structure with occational fetch quest instead you have more of a hub situation where you get a lot of missions that branch out to more, until you finally move on to the next area. They also improve the artifact system noticably.

The Stalker bundle on Steam doesn't even include Clear Sky... lol, sounds like that one is skippable or something to grab when it's dirt cheap during a sale or something. Pripyat definitely sounds awesome. Do they improve the optimization? I'm almost kind of worried since it's much newer if it'd even run on my PC that well at all. Stalker looks pretty good with my setup (vanilla wise) though some of the settings are admittedly on medium and whatnot at best.

Ah yeah, looks like Can You Run It is saying I pass minimum requirements but my video card isn't up to par for it, so doesn't pass recommended. Maybe I should hold off on that one for now.

I still want to give Fallout 3 another shot... I hate the beginning and couldn't get into it at all, but after beating New Vegas I think I'd have a much better grasp at what I'm doing and how to play it. Might try to grab that during a Steam sale sometime. Maybe that'll be my next big FPS sometime.

When it comes to Fallout, I think you're already had the better experience.

Which is to say, I consider New Vegas to be the better game.

Fallout 3 is still worthy if you can get past the beginning, its a good game, but it wasn't nearly as interesting as New Vegas.

Point being, don't feel too bad if you ultimately decide to skip it.

Yeah, I kind of don't feel bad... but after loving New Vegas, the interest kind of comes back at times. The same situation happened to like three friends of mine though, we all loathed Fallout 3 (and I don't like Oblivion either at all honestly), but we all really enjoyed New Vegas. I think Obsidian developing it made a world of difference there, the dialogue was so much better, the pacing at the start of the game was better, everything. Heck, I liked Alpha Protocol. Also loved KOTOR 2, so Obsidian just knows what's up when it comes to hooking me in, lol.

Off and on though, I do just wonder if I should just replay New Vegas instead of trying out 3 for the third time or so. Haha. I am extremely curious how the game would be by siding with the Legion early on and going against the NCR... I have to imagine that'd make the game a lot more challenging since there was way more NCR over the map, but maybe it changes depending on your actions? I have no idea. I did end up being a "Smiling Troublemaker" or something with the NCR though eventually and towards the end there... well I ruled all, heh.

But that game certainly seems like it could be one I'll replay a few times through someday, and the experience will probably be different everytime. Just gotta be prepared for those addicting all-nighters and 60+ hours of game time... haha.

Am I the only one who prefers 3 over NV? I put in around 200 hours to FO3. After finishing New Vegas I tried to start again but was kinda bored.

I think I used that suit until the end of the game too since it was decent armor and good radiation protection.

Gun wise I was using the ones you get from mobs in the train yard for quite a while since ammo was plentiful. Then when I got the modified green one with the scope (the name escapes me right now), I used that almost exclusively for the rest of the game since it was good for long and short range and still used ammo that was easy to get.

There's still quite a way to go after the scientists.

Excellent.

The guns you're probably thinking of are the AK-74u's, since they've got some green on them. lol
