I'm currently taking part in a thread that is in danger of becoming rather heated.
Please can we just remember that differences of opinion are what make this world interesting, and however much we may disagree in various topics, we should always remember that we're here because we really love our gaming.
And before I become too much of a hippy, I would like to say that destroying that Giant Squid 30 minutes ago was great fun. Where's the next one?

Opinions are opinions.
Reasoned arguments are not opinions. I doubt there are many opinions in this forum that are not claimed and understood as such. There are many reasoned arguments, faulty or not, being claimed as such, which is far better than just statings opinions even if conflict may, and should, arise.

an opinion, when stated, is an argument.

Re: Opinions are just that, opinions
I don't really let anything on this forum (or anything online) really get to me. There is so much shit to get upset about in real life, that nothing here is really worth getting upset about.
I think a good arguement is good! As long as everyone knows that its just bullshit, and that we aren't going to kill each other over what others think.
Then again, I try to only talk about video games here, not religion/politics/boy scout policies

Not really. An argument attemps to persuade, an opinion doesn't need to.dsheinem wrote:an opinion, when stated, is an argument.

Thats true. Like, I don't like RTS games. However, I would not try to argue that its a poor genre, its just not my thing.General_Norris wrote:Not really. An argument attemps to persuade, an opinion doesn't need to.dsheinem wrote:an opinion, when stated, is an argument.

Urgh I can't stand RTS. I remember everyone at school going mad over C&C Red Alert and I just never understood the appeal of it. I've never understood the appeal of any RTS since.dunpeal2064 wrote:Thats true. Like, I don't like RTS games. Re: Opinions are just that, opinions
Intention and persuasion have nothing to do with it at a definitional level. An argument is simply the statement of a claim and support. A claim is a statement that you want others to accept. Support is the communication of the words that are necessary and available to get others to accept the claim. If someone makes a claim without support, then they essentially have an incomplete thought, not a clearly stated opinion.General_Norris wrote:Not really. That is an argument that you don't like RTS games, not that RTS games are bad.

Some opinions have negative consequences to others. Not all opinions are created equal.
