Tomb Raider PS1 and Sat version

Post by emurozii »

Hey.

I have the original Tomb Raider for the Saturn. I've always wanted to try the game, but I recently found out that the PS1 version is suppose to be vastly superior in both terms of graphics (higher resolution apparently) and the frame rate is suppose to be a lot better.

Is it true that the PS1 version is vastly better? I'm not bothered if the Saturn's graphics aren't as good, as long as it has a smooth frame rate and actually runs fine. But of course if the PS1 version runs a lot faster then I'll have to wait and get that version.

Thanks in advance peeps.

The PlayStation version does run and look better. Other than that the differences are negligible.

Here's a comparison:

AFAIK the Saturn version draw distance is better and there are certain subtle effects. There is a glitch in the Cistern where you can't access one of the secret areas (it's a pullable block) and can only be accessed in the Playstation version.
What a maneuver!

yeah! I have both and they are fun to play. Saturn version is a little different graphics wise. Control on saturn has some differences compared to playstation. You get used to it.

The venerable site gamerave.com has also put up a comparision of Tomb Raider as well

whichever one you choose, I hope you have lots of fun with it!

You should try Tomb Raider Anniversary (PS2, Xbox and PC). It's improved in every way.

I don't think the PS1 and Saturn versions are obviously better or worse than one another. I did a comparison with the PC version using Dosbox and the Saturn game is hardly the worst of the three.

Video with screenshot comparisons:

Also, I didn't like Tomb Raider Anniversary, they altered the gameplay too much.

Gameplay? They did alter the atmosphere, but the gameplay, if anything, was much smoother.

It's smoother because it plays like Legend, but they added all of these wall climbing segments so it wasn't the same level design anymore. It's still a good game for fans of Legend, but I wouldn't call it a replacement for the original.

Well, I wouldn't say I was a fan of the original in any case. Didn't really care for the 20-meter jumps.

In 1996 it was pretty great, Prince of Persia in 3D. At least I thought it turned out a lot better than Fade to Black did.
